I know that Black and Pecker owns them now. But can they be had new still.

Elu was a tool company from Switzerland, They did not have an extensive line
but a few innovative features and was known to be a quality Company.
B & D Indeed bought them over 10 years ago
I have a small Router practilly never used and was showing it to a friend
last week, He had never heard of the company and I have not seen any adds
for them.
I got Curious and did a Google search and found nothing Later today I will
try to look them up in Thomas or some other Commercial Mags that I get.
To the Best of my Knowledge B & D did them in. I will post if I find
anything out to the opposite

That's what I found out about B & D, Elu and Dewalt.
Long time ago B & D started selling rather cheap tools in Europe.
These tools were primarily designed for the hobbyist. But also
professionals bought them and where rather disappointed of the
quality. Then B & D introduced a "profi line" and hoped that
professionals would buy these tools. But these tools were hardly
successful because B & D was associated with hobby woodworker quality.
Now B & D needed a solution in order to win professional woodworkers
as their customers. Then they found this company Eugen Lutz (ELU)
which was a highly regarded brand in Europe, especially because of
their routers, hand held power planers, miter saws, ... Finally B & D
bought this company and added more and more B & D tools to the Elu
line. In other parts of the world Elu products were sold under the
Dewalt label. The famous DW 621 router was in fact developed by Elu as
OF 97. Personally, I question if Dewalt themselves would have been
able to make such a good tool. Anyway, about three years ago B & D
decided change Elu to Dewalt and from this time on, Elu was no longer
available.

IIRC Elu disappeared with the introduction of the DeWalt line of power hand
tools. As I recall, some of the DeWalt routers have a strong resemblance
to the Elu routers with the exception of the yellow color.

Yeah, but it was something like a decade ago, not 3-4 years. And some of the
DeWalt tools are major improvements on the Elu stuff. The biscuit joine was a
******* to align. The SCMS was an early one, and had some development problems.

That's how I remember it, too.

And some of the DeWalt tools are major improvements on the Elu stuff.

I don't know about that (although you probably know better). From what
I could tell, the Elus that made the transition just had the plastic
changed from slate gray to yellow.

Dewalt, except for the yellow.

I don't recall the Elu SCMS (not that that means anything).

There were more than just routers that made the transition. The wavy
top router is certainly one (Norm used one). The Dewalt jig saw is a
yellow Elu (Norm used one). They had a couple of biscuit joiners (Norm
used the one different from the one I have, and the one he used didn't
make the transition). The 3/8" drill with the belt clip and level
vials in the end is a yellow Elu (Norm used one). The belt sander with
a bag on the front is a yellow Elu (Norm used one). The cordless drill
(from that time period; it's long gone, now) was a yellow Elu (Norm
used one).

So it was quite a few, Norm had quite a bunch of them (he used the
belt sander until Season 6; 1994), and all except the cordless drill
are still in the Dewalt line.

Yeah 10 years sounds about right... I have a DeWalt drill that is about
that old.

If you are talking about the WD 610 DeWalt that has the rack and pinion
design for adjusting the depth of cut, that is an old B&D design. I have an
old B&D gray router that I bought in 1974 that is identical to it except for
color and HP. The DW625 plunge router looked like the old Elu.

I own both a Dewalt DW625 and an ELU MOF 177. Except for the chuck,
they are part for part identical. Even the castings are the same.

It's even older than that! I have a polished aluminum B&D from the early 1960's
that's the same DW610-type router. Only 6A, though. They've been around since
the '50s.

The ELU is the plunge router.

Not the original. It was well made, but almost impossible to align. Nothing
like today's models.

The SCMS was an early one, and had some development problems.

I don't recall the Elu SCMS (not that that means anything).

IIRC, it was an 8-1/2". Nicely made, but hard to adjust. And I may also be
getting it confuzzed with an early DeWalt SCMS.

Excellent history, Christian. It was around 2000 that B&D eliminated the
Elu name and colour from its product line (at least in Europe). I have the
last Elu catalog, 1999, in my collection. I personally own a MOF 177
router, MOF 96 router and a MBR 100 buscuit jointer.

Yep, must be correct. I have an Elu catalogue from 1999 and one from
2000 which should be the last one. In the 2000 catalogue Elu
introduced "power boxes" (= systainers as we know them from Festool)
but when Elu became Dewalt, B & D took them out of the DW program.
BTW, I was at my store this week and found some Elu tools lying
around. Some drills, MOF 96, OF 97. I'm almost sure that these tools
cost exaclty the same as the Dewalts but I might try if I can get some
discount.
