Could someone please advise on how to achieve this look if you are

process (how you actually do it, how many steps etc.), level of

no. the kraftmaid cabs are covered in melamine. they use a similar
process that Schrock cabinets does, i believe is called "thermofoil"
no can do at home AFAIK.

As a related question, what is the best way to achieve the distressed
look that they often put on cabinets to make them appear old. From
what I see, it looks like the distressing process can either be done
before or after the finish is applied.

beat them with Chains, drag them behind the car for a block or two...
or release two 10 year old children on them for exactly one
hour..anything more and the cabs will be destroyed beyond repair.

Deciding what finish to use should include repair of dings as you
mentioned. Exotic multistepped finish that gets dinged is an
experience. Wife distressed a sideboard then I topcoated with WB
Varathane for durability. www.spaltedboard.com then FORUMS the
BRAGGINGBOARD then scroll down to SIDEBOARD.
