Default roughing up 10mil face veneer sheets

Is the a way to rough up the grain and/or raise the grain on 10mil thick
rustic alder veneer? Is the actual wood part of the paper back veneer
"thick" enough to lightly sand it with 100 grit or so paper without cutting
though the face ?

Any other ideas or methods to make a relative smooth veneer sheet look rough
or rustic like ?

Thanks, Tim R
