Delta X-5 6" Jointer
 

Greetings!

I am a novice woodworker...I bought the Delta X-5 6" jointer about a
year ago. I will be honest and say I am not very good at keeping the
thing tuned. Over the past couple of weeks I noticed that the outfeed
table has a wicked dip on the outboard side ( 1/4" ! ) The thing is so
out of whack that I cant joint a straight edge. The out feed table is
at a perfect 90deg. to the fence, but the infeed table is off by about
1/16". Lately, I have been using a Freud "Glue Line" blade to joint by
board edges....pretty sad huh?
Anyone know how to get the tables back to parallel......the manual
mentioned something about adjusting the "gibs".....what the hell is a
friggin gib? I followed the instructions and gave it a shot....I think
I made it a little better....still not a usable jointer though. I also
need to invest in a good steel straight edge....

Any help would be greatly appreciated....I am ready to pitch the thing
into the snow bank outside

Purchase and read "Care and Repair of Shop Machines" by John White.
There's a part in there that'll show you how to make a set of master
bars, and they'll rival any straightedge you could buy. Good luck. Tom

Sources of help.

Dealer you bought the machine from

Delta Technical Service. Call customer service and tell them you want
to talk with someone in Technical service that can walk you through
it. For the DJ machines they have a service bulletin that they can
send out on how to adjust eccentrics to coplaner the tables and adjust
the fence. Yours is a wedge bed so I'm not sure they have one for it,
but it is worth a call.

In these days of just in time manufacturing, castings are no longer seasoned
and Delta Jointer tables have been know to warp (even on the DJ20). If the
jointer was fine when you first got it I can't see the gibs needing
adjustment after only a year. X5 stands for extended 5 year warranty and
Delta usually provides excellent service. Get on the horn to Delta.
