I think I'm gonna quit now.

I'm just gonna sell my tools and go fishing, I think.

stoutman June 28th 05 01:12 AM

Why? Because you can't make a tacky looking tilt-top table??

Just send your tools to me. I will cover the shipping costs.

But once everybody sees those pictures, there will be a glut on the used
tool market and there won't be any woodworkers left to buy them.

Clint June 28th 05 03:10 AM

Personally, I sometimes look at the stuff Tom Plamann makes
(http://www.plamann.com/sys-tmpl/door/), and think about giving up my tools.
But then I remember that I do this for fun, and as a hobby, and even if I
never bring a stick of furniture into the house, it's better than going out
to the bars and casino's... Of course, I've never told SWMBO that last
bit...

Funny looking dart boards...no numbers...

Andy June 28th 05 03:58 AM

Yeah, why else would they flip up besides to throw darts at them? I
was thinking the same thing. I wonder what kind of finish is
self-healing for use on a dart board.

Me too...pruning blade, right? Or The "Demolisher"?
Hold it all together with a roofing nailer till the JB Weld dries, right?

George Max June 28th 05 02:59 PM

I'm not gonna.

This guy caters to the carriage trade. Personally, I don't like all
that marquetry. Less is more - do something for an accent, not a
splashy display like these. They remind me a lot of medieval french
furnishings that may be found in the king's castle. Not to my taste.
And if I may judge from the sticker prices on his site, not to very
many other people's taste either.

Yabbut.... at those prices, you don't need to sell more than a handful of
pieces a year to make a pretty decent living...

The furniture is not exactly to my taste either but you've got to respect
the craftmanship. If you can build that, there's not much you can't build.

OTOH, did you observe the amount of time that went into these pieces, on
spec? Apparently, he has other means of support. If he makes a set every
couple years, he isn't getting rich by woodworking.

You're a piker. Did one with my scout pocket knife and glued it up with
self-rendered pitch extract.

Bars and casinos are cheaper.

If he sells one set every two years that is $60,000 a year. In my book
that is a *very* good living - and for doing something he loves. The
material cost on the two tables probably isn't more than a couple of
thousand, all the cost is in the labor. If I thought I could gross
$60K annually doing woodworking I'd be all over it.

Poppycock and balderdash. All done with waterjet CNC's, lasers and
CAD/CAM.

Yeah! I know the feeling sometimes when I screw up and see that kind of
craftsmanship and look at Planman's work I feel like I'm wastsing my
time and money. But each time I purchase some sort of wood product or
furniture and look at the poor craftsamnship and quality of the product
I feel better and gett the confidence that I can make it better.
Beside's there is no way of knowing if he used a cad system and cnc
machine and how many times and wood wasted to get it right. I would
like to achieve skills on their level but then I bring myself to
reality that I'm just learning and learners make mistakes.
