Default Designing a work table - ATTN Bill "Workbench from worksmith shop.jpg" yEnc 20740 Bytes

To those with problems:

It's just jibberish. Try posting w/o yEnc. I can usually read yEnc, so
maybe it's something else that messing it up. At any rate it's just
noise at this point...

Why do people who post in yEnc get so damn defiant and unhelpful when people
are unable to read what they've posted? I've seen this a zillion times. You
KNOW you're posting in a format that a considerable number of people aren't
going to be able to read, yet you do it anyway, and when people have trouble
your only answer is to tell them to get a REAL newsreader. Yeah thanks, that's
REAL helpful.

And in the end, it just doesn't make any sense. You post your work for
others to see. It's only common sense to post in format that the most
people can read. That isn't yEnc. It may be some day, but certainly
not now.

I think ir might be that many posters have no idea what format their
news group software posts in i.e. The "default" format.

My reader software (Agent) handles everything seamlesly. I don't post
many pics, but if I did, I'd accept the default.

This is the ONLY group that still has complaints about yEnc.
All of Usenet should go back a decade and post in a dead
format because the "regulars' here are just too damn lazy
or defiant to go with the 99.9%.

You still drive a horse and buggy? Have that new fangled
'lecrticty' in your shop? What a bunch of whiners!

No wonder this group has dwindled away. Every time
someone tries to share their work, posting in now standard
formats. they are met with snide comments and complaints.

No matter how many times you say yEnc in NOT standard,
try going to any other binairy group and you will discover,

What's taken over the world for _file sharing_ is bit torrent; it is
UseNet, and yenc, that that has been left behind ... far behind.

Once again, those that use it here need to understand they are at the
peril of having their content ignored by the majority of the few posters
left.

Simple google search found this site:

It says:
Newsguy's web based reader support yEnc (20.02.2002)

I've been notiffied officially that NewsGuy is now offering yEnc support
on its web-based newsreader.
Now also yEncoded messages are detected there and can be downloaded as
easy as if they have been UUencoded on Usenet.

This is a simple link to their homepage - yEnc is not a sponsered
product: http://www.newsguy.com

I could figure it out and have in the past but it is so seldom that any
one actually posts in something other than jpg I chose not to have it on
my latest computer. If you want others to see your pictures YOU need to
present in a format that they can easily see with out jumping through hoops.

jibberish removed...)

The answer is really this...in most situations today, it is simply a
matter of personal preference. If you want to fully enjoy yENC objects
then you will need a multi-part solution for various readers like
Mozilla's Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YEnc

While not exactly 100% correct, Wikipedia does simplify the arguments
here and further, provides a limited historical perspective.

What drives the majority of uunet users today is the simplicity and
convenience of web (html) based interfaces to uunet news vs original
text based (ASCII 7 or 8 bit) interface, once popular with early BBS and
Usenet readers. Of course also in many cases today the host is throwing
adds in your face and tracking every move you make at the same time. :-)

POP3 and ASCII are still preferred means of interfacing with uunet and,
BTW, far less susceptible to malware or viruses than scripted html or
binary based traffic. On the other hand, most of what one sees these
days is simply a relay of conventional gmail or other commercial user
group, as opposed to true uunet; check headers of posts for originating
hosts.

Moving along,

The Original intent of yENC was to reduce the horrendous amount of
overhead required to support binary files in days when bandwidth was
largely limited by dial-up speeds. Some here, tend to forget that huge
files took a very long time to download and decode over standard voice
grade dial-up and, almost nobody allowed native binaries due to limited
server storage, timely delivery, and available bandwidths. I can even
remember when 300 baud was a HUGE breakthrough!

Keep in mind also that while one can compress a text file into a very
small space, most digital photos are already compressed and further
efforts generally result in artifacts and/ or significant loss of detail
-- uh oh, betcha I hear more about that statement from more than a few
self professed experts herein. :-)

Today, there are still news sites & forums in existence that do not
allow native binaries for the same reasons as cited above, many of which
are actually hosted from privately owned PCs, located in someone's
basement and running open source Apache, BSD, or other free solutions.

So, there are still many very good & appropriate uses for yENC (1 - 2%
overhead and very fast vs. binary at 40% or more), even now in today's
Google groups.

Frankly, and at great risk of being severely slash/...dotted, I
personally have no problem with either binary or yENC and further
maintain that this entire argument simply boils down to preference. Some
people like Ford and others prefer Chevrolet, and both will likely get
you to where you want to go.

If you want to view yENC formats, then by all means obtain a 3rd party
solution, or not. Is it required? Nope...especially if your whole life
is devoted only to this particular group. :-)

If you wish, go ahead and experiment with yENC'd photos and do your own
math. The difference in download speed and file size will become
immediately obvious, but, these days, the majority simply do not concern
themselves with such trivial matters as bandwidth or speed, and seem far
more concerned with being severely critical of everyone that does.

more concerned with being severely critical of everyone that does.

Move along, folks ... nothing to see here but thinly disguised snideness
and condescension.

All that hot air you just released wasted far more bandwidth then any
paltry savings by using yEnc.

Those regulars are close to 100% of the people here. Guess you're not
bright enough to know any differently.

Condolences.

A handful is ALL that remains... RIP...

Gee, the regulars are the guys who give the good advise and provide all
kinds of expertise. Any you want to **** them off? Hardly a good move.
But, then again, you obviously don't want anybody to view your work or give
any good advice. You must be a legend in your own mind. Nobody will accuse
you of having any social skills or intelligence.

Why did you post here? Just curious.

Look, I get it. Those 'handful of regulars' are all that's left of a
once bustling group. That's perfectly alright. Keepers of the flame.

It's just I've seen all too often someone will finally share a post
and this whole yEnce thing come up, and it's so easy to resolve
by either setting your news reader, or a simple add-on for
Outlook Express.

Really, I spend most of my time in newsgroups
in, for example vintage TV groups or classic movie groups and the
like .

I used to post here quite some time ago, but no longer. I'm a
retired cabinet maker by trade, and now do projects for family,
friends, and am master carpenter for a theater group and am a
volunteer consultant
at the local community collage. I stay as busy as I want to be.
I have many many digital images of some unique projects.

Anyway, have it your own way. Don't budge an inch. Just don't
gripe at those who try to share......

Peace,

Darrian

And you know what's REALLY easy? For the poster to simply upload using a
native JPEG attachment (rather than going OUT OF THEIR WAY to choose a
non-standard format), resulting in a post that EVERYBODY can read without doing
ANYTHING. If you want the widest number of people to look at what you've
posted, why would you do anything different?

Go back through time and look at the average size of the images that are
typically posted to this group. The sizes are MINISCULE compared the
gargantuan files (full-length movies as an example) posted to other groups. If
I'm viewing a 200K JPEG image, I'm not going to see ANY discernible difference
in the download time between a natively encoded image and one encoded in yEnc.

Simply put, there is NO advantage to using yEnc in a group like this. Save the
yEnc encoding for those files where there is actually something to be gained.

I suggest you take your own advice. You are the one complaining, we

Helpful advice would go a lot further in getting us to support your
format than sarcasm will.

jibberish removed...)

My newsreader (free, Xnews) has native yEnc support. It thankfully does
NOT interpret html links, so it is safer than most that do render html. I
am trying to turn off the yEnc when I post pictures (seldom), but sometimes
it slips my mind. I'd be grateful for a nudge to let me know to repost.

I know you well enough to know that you don't try to annoy people. If you
were to post something in yEnc, my first thought would be that it was a
mistake. You are safe from my killfile. It's the people that
are trying to annoy or prove a point I have a problem with. I believe that
most here will agree.
