I like that, works with any size bushing or base, seems like it would make
the adjustment easier. Now to rec.ww to get the details.

I'm thinking it would be easy enough to turn one from hardwood on the
lathe...

I did this. I was interested in using a 1/4 inch chuck for other
reasons so made mine this way. It seemed too limber to move the base
to center while under tension, so I had a friend turn me one out of
steel. If you made it to fit a 1/2 inch chuck hardwood would probably
work.

I've always used a dovetailing bit for the smaller guide bushings.

Here's a bushing set from Rockler that already has a device to
help center the bushings.

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10671

Seems a reasonable price since you get a set of bushings and the
centering bits.

But this one pushes the base against the screws, mine holds it tight
and centered while I tighten the screws or bushing.

Is this large enough to not go through the opening in a base base? It
would be nice for bushings and having a 1/2" as well as a 1/4" end is
a good touch.

... and that is the beauty of your design. I really like that concept.
You should seriously think about having a number of these made and
marketing them. I know I'd buy a couple -- one for 1/2" collet and one for
1/4" collet

Sorry, I don't understand the question. It has 2 ends for the 2 sizes of
bits (1/4 & 1/2"), and the conical flange to assist in adjusting the base.

I think that Gerald was asking if the maximum diameter of the cone is
larger than the center opening of the router base which you're
attempting to adjust.

Gerald, it doesn't need to be. The only time I think that you'd need
this device is when you were trying to center a base used with a bushing
or template guide. In that case, you just fit the router base with a
small bushing, center it using this device and then insert whatever size
bushing you need.

I thought it would only be used when making NEW bases, centering them
prior to drilling holes for fastening it to the router. I've never
seen a base which would adjust at all on the router. Have you?!?

I think the ones on the Bosch 1617 have the option of using counterbored
oversized holes with pan-head screws.

The Bosch centering cone works on similar principles, and is
double-ended so it works on 1/2" and 1/4" collets.

I've included the Bosch website if the Amazon link doesn't work.
