Default What causes this pattern in tree (picture1) "LogMarkings1r.jpg" (1/1) yEnc 236756 Bytes

My dad was up a a friends cottage and they cut up a large tree that fell down in a windstorm.
the tree has this pattern inside.
Anyone know what causes a wood pattern like this in a tree?

The crosscut of the tree pattern is like a sand dollar in appearance.

Possibly related to what's called "secondary thickening", one
of the things that separate thees from shrubs.

Now that I've been able to view the image, it's obvious what it is.
It's a species, possibly Norfolk Island Pine, that grows branches
symmetrically on six sides at multiple points up the trunk. This
set of six small branches was cut off when the tree was smaller,
and the trunk has grown around the stumps of those branches. You
can see the broken end of one of the branches, surrounded by resin,
on the upper right side.
