Test: my granddaughter's cradle

I'm checking to see if I can still post to the newsgroup and see new
messages. What with Verizon dropping it and no new messages, I'm wondering
if it still works.

I made this for my granddaughter last July. Just got back from her first
birthday party. They haven't taken it down yet because they haven't cleared
out a space in the basement and they're using it for storage. But they
emptied it out so their friends could use it when their infant needed a nap
at the birthday party.

How stable is the crib? Does it swing?

This is a very nice crib. Judging from the holes in the tops on the ends I
would say that the crib will pivot at those points.

Does the cat mind the granddaughter sleeping next to it?

Maybe you should have titled it "Check out my Wood" to see if it drops. G

It turned out well. Yes, it swings on those pivots. I'm attaching a shot
of one of the pivot points and pin which is a 1/2 inch dowel glued to
one drawer knob and epoxied to a hanger bolt. The hanger bolt screws
into the other drawer knob.

I just realized I never got any photos of the pinned side of the frame.
On the other side, after it was all assembled, I drilled a hole at a
steep angle downward through the endboard and the cradle end. Then hung
a piece of dowel from a leather thong so it could be inserted and stop
the rocking. Worked well.

Very stable. There's a center board right under the cradle that stops it
from rocking too far either way and also would support the cradle if
something heavy enough were to break one of the half-inch dowels holding
it up.

Got the plans from http://www.cherrytreetoys.com/ and made the dowels
with Lee Valley's dowel cutters. All cherry except 3/4 ply for the
bottom, which is angle cut on the sides to jam right into the frame and
never fall through. I didn't try to stand in it but I think it could
hold me.

I was pleased with that finish. Smooth and tough. And the grain just
jumps out at ya.
