Let me retract the above question. I was so busy admiring the front of the
footlocker that I neglected to take notice of the carry handles on the end
of the footlocker.

If they are going tenting in bear country, do make sure there are no

Goodies will be confiscated at our Scout camp... the bears have no qualms
about walking in the front flaps of a tent and out the back and in the back
of the next tent and out the front and keep going in and out of tents until
they find something interesting... Last summer two Boy Scouts stayed up all
night shooing two cubs and two adults away from our overnight Weblos
campsite. No goodies in camp, PERIOD!

has crossgrained marks in it that made it unfit for salable work and
the hardware has had more birthdays than my oldest child.

I'll be making a couple of trays for it and doing the final fitting of

The last time the bears found something at the council camp it was a Scout
Master's lean-to and personal possessions that got trashed by the bear (not
our group). This isn't the kind of irresponsible example we like to set for
the boys... There are no bear boxes on the sites and the camp has an
electric fence around the dumpsters to discourage the bears. They had to
destroy one bear that came back several times after being relocated and
having food/snacks in the tents would likely lead to more being destroyed...
Goodies have to be consumed and the waste removed to the dumpsters before
bed!

I've led the troop into wilderness camp sites many times and I've laid down
the rules for each trip. I was inferring that in spite of the rules you lay
down, a scout will sooner or later bring goodies. I cancelled a Philmont
trip because some of my older scouts brought goodies on a wilderness
campout.
I wasn't suggesting the rules weren't necessary, but the only way I know to
insure they are followed is to inspect all of the boxes prior to departure.
When you said No goodies in camp, PERIOD!, I knew that sooner or later a
scout will transgress the rule.

In our troop we made a campout, one every month. Except for summer camp,
they all were backpacking trips. We earned the polar bear patch at least
once a year. For the non-scouters, that means we slept on the ground (in a
tent) when there was ice on the tents in the morning. In spite of the
regimen, the scouts still transgressed rule. They were the older scouts as
is evidenced that we were Philmont bound. I will say they got the message
though, I never caught them with the goodies again.

Have you done the Woodbadge training? I'm a Beaver. I still have my beads
and I treasure them. :-)

They always seem to look cute, until they are headed in your direction

I never made it to Philmont because I had to cancel after the scouts
transgressed the rules. I refused to take a patrol that I couldn't trust to
follow orders because Philmont is true wilderness camping. I know the bear
bags have to be suspended from high trees and high enough the bears can't
jump and reach them. I never rigged one though.

Don't under estimate what a coon can do. We had one walk into the campsite
at summer camp one year and tried to get into an igloo cooler that had food
in it and when we tried to shoo the coon away, he challenged us big time.

John's right about the no goodies rule, but it is hard to enforce, and as
John mentioned, even the adults can be idiots.

I went on a scout backpack camping trip when I was about 13 to an area that
had lots of elk and deer. We got to our campsite and just dumped our packs
and scattered. I guess we needed a little time without those heavy packs
weighing us down.

I got back to the campsite about twenty minutes later and a deer had his
head in my pack chowing down on my food for the next three days. I screamed
and charged him. He paniced and took off still wearing my pack over his
head. We probably ran at least two hundred yards with that pack over his
head before he finally managed to get it off his head. By this time the
pack was completely empty. All my pack contents had been scattered along the
flight path.

It took me an hour to complete picking up my worldly goods and transport
them back to camp. I was on half rations for the next three days. That
definitely made me crabby. And I suspended my food from a tree after that.

Add deer to that list.

Once I was camping with my dad and brother. We had suspended our
backpacks (containing our food) in trees.
I woke up the next morning to the spectacle of a squirrel backing out of
a hole he'd chewed in my brother's pack, pulling a candy bar half his
size. It was funny watching him run off, balancing that huge candy bar
in his mouth as he ran.

Add squirrels to that list.
