Now there's an inspiring proud dad! But John, slave labor at such a young
age.. Well at least they get to work with very high quality hand tools..
Today a miter joint, 15 years from now a 18th century reproduction
masterpiece.. Good job, dad..

Jim,

Thanks! But I feel compelled to mention that it's not slave labor... they
work for woodworking show ribbons. ;~) The picture frames under construction
in the photos earned them 2nd place at Woodworkers Showcase last year and
this year they took 1st and 3rd for their individual entries.

The picture frames are on http://www.nwawoodworkingshow.org/ in the Youth
section of the 2007 winners. The 2008 winner page is still being built.

Re the tools, I see no point in giving them crummy tools to work with...
they use my finely tuned tools. To date the only accidents that damaged
tools both involved my 1/2" chisel--one trip to the concrete floor and
another hitting the Record vise. Those two incidents left the chisel quite a
bit shorter after grinding back beyond the broken corners. The only blood
has been from splinters!

I think one of the next project for them will be to make new beds... nice
ones, not straw under the work bench. ;~)

They both seem to be very much into their projects. It is good to see kids
with something besides a video game control or iPod in their hand.

One question is the handle on the backsaw homemade?

No... it's an L-N small crosscut saw. It's a very handy saw for use with the
shooting board--when used as a bench hook--when working with small stock.

I also find that kids like playing with razor sharp tools. As such they can
be persuaded away from the electronic stuff for at least a little while. ;~)
