Detail shots. The legs are fixed to the side apron, the front is anchor
bolted to the leg. The top is lag bolted down with slotted holes for
expansion. I filled all the knots in the top and sanded it smooth, but the
knots in the legs are left open (stabilized with gorilla glue).

Can you provide more details on what I'm seeing here? I can't tell what they
are or what they hold.

Looks good!

It will be interesting to hear what happens after some times passes and that
2x BORG
construction material actually dries out.

I thought it just didn't like being in a vehicle. You can pick the
straightest boards on the rack, and get home with a bunch of twisted junk.

That's the nut and washer on the end of an anchor bolt lag-threaded into the
leg. A 1 1/4" pocket drilled into (not through) the back of the front apron
has enough room to thread the washer and nut on the machine thread end.
There's also a 1/2" tenon on the end of the board, dry fit into a mortise on
the leg.

I've actually chosen straight grained, rift to nearly quarter sawn 2X
materials @ BORGS for my shop furniture, and gotten great results
after planing and drying it.

You'll reject lots of boards, but it is possible. Read the ends!

Yep ... it's amazing how much rift and quarter sawn red oak stock can be in
the racks at the BORG's, if you just take the time to look. I routinely make
a pass by the bins, do a quick check, and occasionally grab a board or two
for future face frames.

Nice looking piece , what kind of finish did you use ? Looks like you have
tapered the legs both inside and out, personally I prefer the inside tapers
only it gives the piece a better looking " stance"....mjh

I'm still trying to figure out the different ways that aprons are attached.
This is my first time seeing this. Can I assume these are centered inside
the tenon and the lag bolt is set into the bottom of the mortise?

That's right. Here are some shots of my workbench, using carriage bolts
instead of the lag threaded anchor bolts. I didn't take any pics of the
desk during assembly, but this should get the point accross. HTH

I stumbled accross a nice piece of curly red oak at the Borg one day and
bought it for no particular reason. It eventually turned into a nice base
for a rocking horse.

The finish is water based poly with TransTints Red Mahogany.

I agree on the look of legs, I had intended to taper 3 sides - leaving the
outside (front) face straight - but screwed up the 4th leg and had to cut
all four to match. Just don't tell anyone...

Good job!
I like the finish, the fact it is made from something other than cherry
and the novel design - well done.
And cheaper than Ikea? I'll have to make sure Mrs Mekon doesn't see
that bit. :) Raising the bar like that could make things difficult! :)
