What are the differences between an MT-1 and a MT-2 centers

I have a lathe that takes MT-1 spur center and MT-1 live center. Seeing
that I don't know much about lathes, what would happen if I put a MT-2 spur
drive into the MT-1 spindle? Would it fit? Would it fall out? Is there a
visual difference between the MT1 and the MT2? Can they be mistakenly
interchanged? I know they have different taper dimensions but how do you
know what you have without a mic or label?

Thanks.... Just trying to Learn!

You can't do that.

MT1 and MT2 are two different sizes of tooling. There are sleeves that can be
interposed to use the two together, but usually you'd be trying to use a
smaller MT male- shanked device with a larger MT female (inside) bore
(headstock or tailstock). Since your lathe is MT1 on both ends (both bores),
it would be extremely unusual to mount MT2 tooling on your lathe. It would be
by what are termed extension sleeves--MT1 (male) external taper to MT2 internal
(female) taper. These to exist, but their use on your lathe would make no
sense--small capacity lathe doing large capacity lathe work.

The MT2 wouldn't fit because its diameter is larger. If you put a MT1 into
a MT2 hole it would be very sloppy and fall out. Without knowing the easist
way to determine what you have would be by measuring the diameter at one end
and they are different enough that a ruler would do. Do a Google search for
"Morse Taper" and you'll likely find a table of the dimensions.

Billh.... Took your advice and checked out the dimensions and it appears
that the MT1 is .475 at the large end while the MT2 is .700 at the large
end.... so this is what you were talking about the MT2 won't fit "all the
way into" the MT1 spindle.

Thanks to All for help... I didn't know that they were that visually
different in size.

Morse Taper Sizes

Size Diameter Diameter Length
(small end) (big end)
#0 0.25" 0.37" 2-11/32"
#1 0.37 0.47 2-9/16
#2 0.57 0.70 3-1/8
#3 0.78 0.94 3-7/8

MT sizes go up to #7, but this chart shows the common sizes. Small MT
tapers can be adapted to larger spindles using Morse-taper sleeves.
Having a Morse taper spindle on your lathe is a big advantage to
fitting accessories. There are other taper standards other than
Morse.
