MDF Bowl
 

I am making a prototype part for work that is basically a 18" bowl with a
raised center. I was wondering if MDF would be a good candidate for this
project. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You'll be using _your_ tools? I know I wouldn't cut the stuff with mine.
If you think you don't want to see legislation or sausage made, you'll
surely reconsider when you see MDF. Consider construction lumber.

Not to mention the dust! Of course, the thunderstorm that brought me in
would settle that....

MDF Bowl
 

MDF is OK, but the dust and mess, and it is abrasive, so hard on tools.

In addition, the surface is harder than the centre, so if you are laminating
layers, you will end up with hard and soft sections, like grain lines in
soft timbers, which can make finishing more difficult than it need be.

That said, the stuff can be turned and easily as there is no grain.

We had a competition down here a few years back where one category as for
"engineered wood". Follow this link to have a look at what you can do with

I think MDF is a good choice - it's dimensionally stable, very uniform, and
cuts well with sharp tools. it isn't very strong, but that may not be
important
