I sure would love to revitalize this group with my presence. Most of you won't remember this but there was a time when this group was the preeminent source of online woodturning discussion. Stubby was King, Oneway was supporting terror, and Robust wasn't even a glimmer in Brent's eye yet. The likes of myself, Lyn, Arch, Ruth, Paul, DJ, and Leiv lived here and blessed it with a fountain of knowledge that can't be matched by the Facebook groups that are currently all the rage. There are many reasons for the decline here. Most notably the Utah Faction. Most of you won't know about this conspiracy but be certain it's alive and well. I can't do this alone though. I need your help. Only I spearhead this and I'm prepared toself finance. I pledge not to take any special interest money. Join me in making RCW great again.
God Bless,
Al Kyder

I haven't been able to fathom out why Foolsbook has replaced so many
Usenet groups. Is it because malcontents can be blocked?

I've got better blocking and filtering tools for Usenet than anywhere
else.

The problem is HTTP is king. It's cousin, HTTPS is working on succeeding
the king. Usenet is accessible primarily through NNTP and some ok but
not great HTTP to Usenet relays (Homeownershub, Google Groups.) For
someone to get on Usenet nowadays, they have to go looking for it...
Which means they first have to learn there's that option! (In the
beginning of Firefox, one of the things people had to learn was the word
"browser" and "There's a choice?")

Couple that with just about everybody being on Facebook. I'm only on
Facebook because everyone else is... and I value being able to
communicate with them via messaging or IM more than I dislike and
distrust Facebook.

Oh, btw, if you reuse passwords (like many of us do, we have to!) make
your Facebook password unique. Go ahead, write it down. Seriously! Use
Keepass or something and write it down!

So what am I willing to do for RCW? I will continue to post messages
when the time arises to ask questions and respond to posts according to
my ability. I will use capitol letters and periods, separating my posts
into short paragraphs for easy reading.

I was a member briefly when a UK food group collapsed and the main
people migrated to FB. However, it raided my e-mail address book without
my knowledge or permission and kept inviting me to "friend" others.
Also, every time someone farted they updated their page and I received
immediate notification.
The annoying thing is that they still have my basic data and should I
foolishly log on, I'll be swamped with messages again.

You can turn those notifications off. One of the first things I did was
turned almost everything off and set only the notifications I wanted to
e-mail. I also tightened security as much as possible. Most things are
shared by default, so I turned all that junk off.

Facebook does suggest a lot of possible friends, and that's one of the
reasons it's so popular. It's so easy to add more people. You friend
Backchecker and Pylon, and Backchecker and Pylon have friended Goal
Scorer so it figures you might want to friend Goal Scorer too and makes
it easy. After some calibration, though, that part gets deemphasized.
(You'll initially get a flood of people who want to friend you. Not all
of them you know or even care about.)

I do NOT have an e-mail address book, if I want to e-mail someone again I
have to look their address up in my inbox. Too many problems with
address books, like someone's account is compromised and an e-mail is
sent to everybody.

It's too bad Yahoo! killed itself. For discussion groups, they could
have been a great Facebook alternative. They're walking dead, and the
worst thing is their CEO knows how to fix it! She said "we didn't focus
on making one or two key products great, we spread out too much."
Miranda, hire me and give me the power to fix it and you won't have to
sell the company!

My local ISP deleted access to Usenet and I was forced to go the Google Groups route. As most others have said, I much prefer this medium, rather than the "walking down the hall and shouting at the people in the side rooms" experience that Facebook is. I keep a monitor on this group, but just wish there was more interaction.

I didn't know of those procedures at the time and the whole concept of
FB made no sense anyway.

Web sites are sparkly. Usenet text just lays there.
That's what I like about Usenet.

I won't use facebook for much, just check what my wife posts. But
some of the other sites (lumberjocks, etc.) are pretty good.

A lot of ISP's killed Usenet because they didn't believe in it and the
ratty Music industry was going crazy on people coping audio files over
some of the binary versions of this groups. I now pay a whopping $2.95
to get 9 groups (could be more). Now more price on the ISP anyway.

I was using Usenet back in the 90's. We had custom groups through
Corporate as well. Authorized at work. :-)

But I did metal at home.
