Default new techniques and kokeshi dolls

saw a video of a japanese turner making kokeshi dolls
apparently they are made in northern japan

he had severla interesting techniques
the tool rest was far from the work and more of a hand rest
he guided the tool freehand and below the centerline

he also used an interesting technique to afix the doll head

he gouged a hole in the top and then pressed the doll head into the
hole using hand pressure

there was a small knob on the head base that fit into the base

there was a small puff of smoke from friction and a slight burn

not sure what finish was used but it looked good

You do know he was using a hook chisel, right? That "riding the bevel"
for a hook means the tool cuts below center line

she used at least three different chisels and i never got a good look at
any one of them

i have used a spindle gouge below the center line
