Delta 14" Bandsaw Upgrade Advice Needed
 

Having just burned out the 1 hp motor in my Delta 14" bandsaw (w/riser)
while cutting bowl blanks from green walnut logs, I'm looking for
advice on the most (cost) effective upgrade for this machine. I'm
reluctant to lobby SWMBO for the cost of a big Italian bandsaw, so I'm
trying to work out a motor replacement/upgrade.

Can this frame handle a 2 hp motor? I'll probably go straight to 220V
for whatever I settle on.

Is form factor for the replacement a big issue, or do most motors fit
most mounts?

Nope, a 2HP would outwork a single belt, even if you adapted the mount. You
probably should have been at 220v anyway to keep the motor cooler if you
regularly cut at or near capacity.

Sounds like you're going to have to get a big one or control your ambition.

I'd talk with Louis Iturra (888-722-7078) who probably knows more about
the Delta 14 Bandsaw than anyone else living. Alas, he has no web site,
but his almost 200 page free catalog is really as much a high
performance manual for the 14 Delta and its clones as it is a sales item.

Louis recommends nothing LESS than a 1.5 HP industrial grade motor for
optimal performance. The latest Delta now has a 1.5 motor, though I
doubt it's as industrial grade (Baldor, etc.) as some you might be able
to obtain on your own.

I've been using Louis' products for many years now, and all have been
worthwhile additions (Bandrollers, shims, graphite and ceramic guides
and plates, tension spring, tensioner, etc.).

So I think it is well worth your time to learn what he has to say, and
then seriously consider taking his advice.

You could economically get double v-belt pulleys to replace the single
v-belt type you have now.

My 2hp Jet 20" has a single V belt. Never slips, although sometimes when the shavings & dust build up in the lower cabinet, its
does turn itself inside-out.
