Attaching a Supernova chuck to a South Bend Lathe?

Hi Brian

To bad you didn't get a oneway stronghold, the Oneway Co. will machine a
custom adapter for their chuck, but you could go the way I did, by using
a morse taper with a drawbar, they are available with a soft straight
shank that can be machined, I ordered a adapter for my chuck without
thread (for a shopsmith) and made it to fit onto the morse taper shank
(heat shrink it on and it will never budge)

hope this is some help, let us know what you do and how it works.

Have fun and take care

Brian,
Teknatool must make a 1 X 8 insert for the SuperNova chuck. I have used one on
a Jet Mini, which also has a 1X8. 1X8 is a very common spindle thread. Check
the Craft Supplies USA catalog . They sell the SuperNova chuck and the inserts
for your lathe.

Jim,
In all but your post, Brian's message shows his spindle size as 11/2" x 8,
not a very common size.

Vicmarc makes an adaptor for their chuck with that thread size, but they are
the only ones to do so, to my knowledge.

Weird. I looked at the post several times, and it said 1 X 8, at least with my
reader. No wonder he was having trouble finding an adapter.

for what it's worth, I may be able to make an adapter - since I use 1.5X8
nuts to make faceplates for powermatic lathes, I can handle the spindle
thread - I wonder what the thread on the chuck body is - I'm too lazy to go
out and try and figure out what my super nova chuck has.....

if the chuck body threads are large enough that it's possible to make an
adapter, you can try dropping me a note - or you can visit my web page
(www.home.labridge.com/~wnoble) - your choice. to reach me don't reply to
this posting, email me using the address on my web site.
