Default Nova 3000 lathe

I am considering buying the Nova 3000 lathe. Has anyone any experience with
the 1 1/2 HP Leeson DC motor and variable speed control. I have heard that
there is problems with the shaft on the motor breaking under low torques.
Thanx in advance for your help.

Not exactly but I have a 1 HP Leeson DC with variable speed on a Nova 1500.
Still working fine after about 10 years

Hi Larry,
I've had this set up for about 4 years and never had that problem and I've
turned many 15" bowls.

A long thread about the Nova lathe, marching through time.
I brought my Nova DVR in August of 2002. An electronic lathe is a joy
to turn on. The swivel head makes faceplate turning so much easier. I
fine the 115-120 plug gives me enough power. Nice and smooth I never
turn off the computer and the speed is where I left it last. The 1
1/4" x 8 spindle fits my existing faceplates & chucks without having
to invest more chucking devices. There is a owners group for the Nova.

I went through two different Leeson motors on my old Nova 3000 and the
previous owner also went through one before returning it to the place of
purchase..My belief is the breakage occurs as a result of the motor wobbling
at the mounting point to the lathe head..The wobbling is miniscule and is
exagerated by the long overhang of the Leeson dc motors...I later mounted a
Baldor ac motor to this same lathe and used it a year with no problem other
than having to forgo the niceties of reverse and variable speed...the dvr is
night and day difference from the 3000,,Good luck on whatever you
decide,Rick
