RCW's Woodturners, Woodturning and Woodturnings comprise an amazing
diversity of Personality, Process and Product. There's 'Woodturner'
Charlie's wonderful 'Woodturning' methods that result in innovative
'Woodturnings' that add so much thought and variety to our group. Other
RCW Woodturner's Woodturning efforts result in excellent Woodurnings.
Sure enough this post is defensive wadding; doggerel at its worst, but
it's as readable and useful as spam.


Some of us turn for the pleasure of turning, caring little for the
finished product. Others suffer the turning for the satisfaction of a
fine product. Some of us turn only as a excuse to collect an ever
increasing accumulation of duplicated tools and equipment. Several of us
attempt to produce turnings that are any shape but round and symmetric
on a machine designed to make wood round and symmetric.


Some of us turn to make something to sell, others to make gifts, others
don't really know what to do with their accumulated turnings; too many
to keep, too nice to give to strangers. too much trouble and not enough
'involvement' to sell. Nice turnings; they sit gathering dust.



What an unusual hobby/occupation and what a stupid musing. Well at at
least I'm not pontificating about art vs craft and I'm not peddling
Viagra nor do I have a fortune in an African bank to share with you.
Besides I'm musing about woodturning, even if that's become a minority
topic here compared to spammed sex and florid ignorance. OTOH, maybe
woodturning has become spam. RCS, Rec Crafts Spamming? I hope not, so
please Y'all, post _something about the "W" in RCW, even if this COC
will probably criticize it. :)

for me, wood turning is part of an exploration - an exploration into new (or
new aspects) of an artful craft, or possibly a crafty art. It is about the
process, but the process includes a pleasing result. I am enamored of my
recent project, liking it more each time I look at it or touch it. For this
reason it will make a swell gift for a friend or relative. I do like the idea
of getting more stuff for my man-cave, but I am severely limited in space, so
my new stuff is usually pretty small, or else I have to get rid of something
else that I have not used in a long time. (this is actually a foolish and
short-sighted policy... just because I have not used a thing for 10 or 20
years does not mean it can be safely discarded, reference some wood samples
that are older than I am, recently used in my most recent project.)

This has nothing to do with the art of peddling viagra crafts from an African
bank. Besides, it gave me bad headaches.

The attraction of woodturning is that it's got something for almost
everyone - and there don't seem to be any bounds one must stay within -
The Wild West of Woodworking. Round & Brown or Totally Off The Wall,
and everything in between, all included in the Big Tent of the
woodturning community.

WHY you turn isn't important. WHAT you turn isn't important either.
THAT you turn is the only requirement of this community. And if you
help another turner along, or ask questions you've thought about and
can't come up with an answer - and the answer will be helpful to another
turner afraid to ask "a dumb question"- that's a bonus - and the real
value of places like this one. Sharing knowledge,
experience and ideas - keeps wood turning growing - in all sorts of
directions.

I turned 4 bowls yesterday morning but broke one while buffing it.
They were about 1 1/2 inches diameter. How's that?

Speaking of florid ignorance, I stopped by the Health Department to
tell them they had mis-spelled 'tetanus' on their sign out in front of
the building.

Hey Gerald, Those Gawja Bulldawgs at the H.D. were trying to take on
airs and put on the dog and couldn't pull it off. Everybody in Macon
knows tetanus is spelled "Lock Jaw".


Good turnings --? Buffing, but 3 out of 4 ain't bad. :)

I no longer see much in the way of spam. Eternal-September seems to do a
decent job of filtering.

On the wood turning side of things, I can no longer stand And turn so I got
the oldest boy to dig my Unimat out of the attic for me. Needs a fair amount
of work, but I'm looking forward to turning wood and non-ferrous metals on
it. May even do some milling.

I am so sorry that you can't stand at your lathe anymore. I have
trouble standing too, but sit on a high stool and turn small. Thanks
for all your wit, wisdom and cogent comments over the years here.


Please keep us informed about your renewed small machining & woodturning
adventures and the ways you've found help to cope with "turning
disability". I have a Sheldon 10in engine lathe from a WWII cruiser and
a small Atlas milling machine. Never used these days, but I hate to give
them up. Sort of like stopping driving my PU would mean the end of my
independence. BTW, all you younger guys in your 60s and 70s, don't
wait, enjoy your journeys and have fun _NOW!

Got a kick out of your list of alternatives to get rid of unwanted bowls. I
have been turning for quite a few years now and have almost every shelf in
our house occupied with bowls. I don't want to go through the hassle of
selling them but did find a neat alternative. Our church has a yearly
"silent auction" to raise funds to pay off the parish debt. For the last
few years I gave them a couple of segmented bowls and 8 regular bowls for
their auction. Then when the auction is over the church sends me a
statement stating the total amount of money received for the bowls. Then I
use this as a tax deduction because it represents a gift to non profit.
This way I get a few shelves cleared off and a little tax deduction to boot.
