An earth shaking off center invention or just an off centerinventor?

Found a junked 28" piece of 2" X 3/8" steel flat with 1/4" holes 3/4"
apart all along it. Thought to cut it in half and weld a 1 1/4" X 8tpi
spindle nut to the center of one half and drill a 60 deg. tail center
hole in the other.
I figure I can fix two balanced blanks between each half the same no. of
holes off center and by turning then rotating 180deg. make 'big fat or
flat ovals', plus get two for the price of one. :) IOW, the centers are
more offset than the blanks would normally allow. What do I do with two
big flat ovals, anyway?

I vaguely remember something like this, but before I fracture my nose
and/or put another hole in the ceiling thought I'd better ask rcw if
this makes any sense. Been done before? Won't work? Too risky? Why
bother? Well, my Harbor Freight auto tail pipe expander does fine as an
expansion 'pin' chuck, but somehow I don't seem to use it. :)

I know, I know. "Give it up Arch!, just go turn some bowls like normal
turners do".

Sounds like it will work. Too risky? OMHO, very risky. If I have it
properly visualized, you are going to have a dumb bell spinning like a
propeller while you work. One little lapse and.... Arch, you are a
retired physician, so you know that people OUR age can get pneumonia and die
just from lying in a hospital bed.

But let's take this discussion back to some of your earlier musings. It
seems to me that when you are driven by the prospects and possibilities of a
mechanical technique, you are doing CRAFT. When you have an esthetic goal,
and the mechanics is simply a means to achieve that goal, you are doing ART.

Arch

Yes you can do it, however I thought that approaching them from the
inside would give you a nicer shape, of course if you do both from the
inside and outside you could make some classy assemblies with
contrasting colors, then again you could probably do all this with a
bandsaw and some sanding, no adrenaline rush though.

Is your live insurance paid up, ? you do have to think of your better
half.

My advice, DON'T DO IT, I would like to read your musings for a long
time yet.

Have fun and take care

Hey Arch... I agree with the guys here. If you are looking for a
thrill, jump in the shower with the hot water off.

Sounds like a REALLY risky idea to me.
