Speed Control

I live in the UK and have a Record DML24 wood turning lathe. I would like to
add electronic speed control to this. Does any one know if this is possible?

Steve it should be possible but you will need to change the Motor to a
3 Phase Motor which while you are doing this you may wish to increase
the Power from the 1/3rd HP upto say a 1/2HP.

I notice that 1/3rd HP Motors come in Frame Size 63 and 71 whereas
1/2HP Motors are generally available as Frame Size 71, this refers to
the height to the centre of the Shaft in mm.

Also Frame 63 Motors have a 11mm Dia. shaft whereas Frame 71 are with a
14mm shaft.

So there are a number of issues to take into consideration.

Any larger and you may also have to think about the Pulley Bore and
Motor Fixing/Mounting.

I did an upgrade on my Hegner and have included the process in the
Hints & Tips Section of my WEB Site.

Possible with DC motors. I know that (at least one) AC motors can be
damaged when connected to speed controls. I have a variable speed,
plus a reseversing switch, on my DC motor--it's great.
