[ AD ] woodturning videos for rent, online, delivered by first class mail

I hope you'll forgive a brief plug:

I run Technical Video Rental. We're now in our third year of renting
out instructional and craft videos online, and delivering them via
first class mail to your door.

We carry videos on woodturning, woodworking, luthiery, etc.

You can see our selection at

I've rented 3 of them now, one was unplayable (duped disk, replayed
the first part of the show over, no ending)

Another was seriously scratched up, but did play in my 2nd player.

The 3rd disk played fine, no problems at all. While I like the
service, and the price is right, I hope quality control picks up. If
I get another scratched up one, I'm done.

A duped disk? That is pretty much against the law I'd say. I wonder
what the copyright owner would have to say about a company which
duplicates disks and then rents them out -- even if it is at a good price.

Thanks,

====That may be covered in their FAQ on the website. As long as they are
paying royalties, etc, I would imagine that it is similar to a public
library loaning books they have purchased.

Ok, I just read the FAQ and did not see anywhere that is covered.
Libraries can loan all the books they want but they cannot make a copy
of a book and loan it out.

For the record, TVR absolutely does not duplicate or pirate disks.

All videos are original. Under US Copyright law, we have the right to
rent out original copies that we purchase; we do NOT have the right to
make copies.

As a copyright holder and as a patent holder myself, I take
intellectual property laws VERY seriously.

Many of the authors we carry are running small, home based companies,
and thus the DVDs they sell are home-made DVD+/-Rs.

I'll update the FAQ.

Thanks for the good question!

Xlat,

I'm sorry you've had some problems with quality control. If 1 in 100
disks has a scratch on it, the chance of renting two disks and having
them both scratched (although you do note that the second one played in
another player) is about 1 in 10,000.

On the other hand, given a large enough customer base, if the chance of
something happening is 1 in 10,000, it will happen sooner or later.

Contact me off list, and I'll give you a free rental to make it up to
you.

Thanks for the feedback,

TJIC

I've just updated the FAQ.

Thanks for the good questions!

http://technicalvideorental.com/FAQ....licated_copies

Some of the DVDs are DVD+/- R. Does this mean that you've duplicated /
pirated them?

Absolutely not.

All videos are original. Under US Copyright law, we have the right to
rent out original copies that we purchase; we do NOT have the right to
make copies.

TVR takes intellectual property laws VERY seriously.

Many of the authors we carry are running small, home based companies,
and thus the DVDs they sell are home-made DVD+/-Rs.

Other DVDs are from larger firms, and the DVDs they sell are normal
pressed DVDs.

That's why you'll find a mix of DVD types in our inventory.
