yellow flame in gas fire

Hello all. I have a gas fire.

http://www.gasapplianceguide.co.uk/R...Black_03_1.jpg

anyway the middle 2 bars burn blue with the top quarter yellowish. The outer
two bars are blue / orange normal

I have cleaned the jets that feed the venturi (?) and the venturi (?) itself

the venturi is the block with the holes in that the gas burns from. (i
think)

Why is this ? the flue/chimney is good with air being drawn through and
besides, the outer two bars are ok.

Does it tend to spend most of its lit life with just the inner two
burners on? When this is the case, you often see a difference in the
colour of the centre burners after a while. I presume this is due to
accumulation of combustion deposits on the radiant reflector and grill.

Cheers,

John.

Just to be double sure take the venturi / flame mesh assembly off and wash it under the tap (flush in both directions) to make sure no lint or anything remains, all the mesh the flame comes through is clear and no fluf (lint) lurking within/beneath. To check operation of jets or for blockages in the tubes you would need to gas rate the fire. If everything is clean, it passes the gas rate test flue flow test and spillage test with flying colours, you're probably OK as far as I can say without seeing it.

It is 6 years old and yes, it is rare to use the outer 2 bars.
When its heated up, you can see the flames in the inner 2 bars. Never used
to be like that.

It's quite difficult to clean this well, it becomes blocked with dust of all
kinds including particles of rust. I spend ages pricking each hole with a
fine sewing needle, prodding it several times. It does help. The ideal
solution would be to blow out the dirt in the same direction as the gas flow
but we can't do that easily with ours.

A yellow flame is an indication that less than the optimal amount of
oxygen is being using during combustion and some carbon is being
produced (carbon monoxide will also be produced under these
circumstances but as long as you have a good draw on your chimney that's
not a problem). I am not a gas fire specialist, BTW, but that is why the
flame is yellow.

I have it fixed. I vacuumed out the venturi. Must have been a bit clogged
inside. Rather than disconnect it all, I had the ingenious idea of using a
straw taped onto the end of a vac pipe. worked a treat.

Excellent idea. I'll try it next time I need to.

I've just had this vision of a vacuum cleaner turning into a jet
engine, if you should happen to try this without switching the
gas off first ;-)

Well, it's a nice image but think about it. The gas wouldn't be turned on
unless thee was a flame. If there was a flame it would be too hot to get
near ...

Really, well, I've given up looking these days. The daft thing is this
system home owners club must be one of the rare cases where the date is mega
visible on a post for a blind user, but obviously invisible to a sighted
one, unless they are all so stupid they cannot understand the date?
Weird like.

Ive explained before Brian but youve obviously missed it.

Yes, the date is plain as day if you follow the posted links BUT HOH likes
to throw up old posts as new posts on the front page of the site inviting
responses. These re-posts have no visible date.

If you click on the €śNeed your advice€ť tab or the €śrecently answered€ť tabs
on the home page, you wont see any dates.

Its not that HOH users are incredibly stupid, its the stupid way that
posts without dates are promoted.

I have been caught out a couple of times. I don't use HOH - Thunderbird
works fine for me - but while Googling for something, I have
occasionally seen a post that has caught my attention, with no obviously
visible date, and replied to it.

More likely they don’t even look at the date, its very obvious,
but they don’t realise it can be more than a decade old.
