Fastening plastic end cap
 

We had a conservatory refurbished and the window sills were replaced
with plastic coated MDF. The cut ends had plastic moulding glued over
them to cover the bare MDF.

Needless to say, the silicone sealant that was used to stick them turns
out to be non-sticky as far as plastic is concerned and the covers fall
off as soon as you look at them.

What would you suggest to fasten them instead ? The plastic looks and
feels as though it might be ABS, but doesn't carry any markings.

One obvious option would be to screw them on, but it would be neater to
glue them if there is a way that would keep them stuck on.

If it's MDF to MDF, then a waterproof wood glue. If PVC to PVC, solvent
weld glue for PVC drainpipes should do.

The problem is that what's needed is a suitable glue to stick the
plastic ( which looks a bit like ABS ) to the sawn end of the MDF.

My only thoughts have been screws or self-adhesive Velcro on the
plastic and the wood, but I'm not totally sold on either.

Just wondering if there's anybody who's solved the problem.

Contact adhesive should do it - just check that it's not going to
dissolve the plastic first.

Silicone sealant was what was first used by the contractors and didn't
work.

I'll try contact adhesive next. That sounds plausible.
