Any ideas for making sliding door gear from which to suspend a fairly
lightweight, tallish cupboard door?

One possibility....

Sliding door channels from B&Q etc. Different sizes for top and bottom. It
depends on the size / weight / thickness of the door and of course it won't
be suspended - the door will rest in the bottom channel and be supported by
the top channel. Not a perfect solution but it will work.

Go to Homebase and look out the Magnet section. They have sliding door
gear there.
