Default strange nest

Hi
I have a strange looking nest in my attic... It looks like a white
coloured shell about the size of a fist and is attached to one of the roof
joists 18 inches up.. haven't gotten that close to it to 'look' inside etc
there is a small 'mess' just below it... taken a couple of pics if anyone
care to email me to have a look!
Thankyou Daryn

Probably a wasp of some kind. At this time of year any occupants will be
dead. Wasps do not re-use their nests but start a new one in the spring.

Which they make by chewing up my beloved shed, the little perishers! :-(

Well, your shed was made by chewing up a forest ... :-)

But they will return to the same area. We disposed of a wasps nest
situated on a balcony outside our bedroom window one year and the
following year wasps were to be seen swarming around in the same spot

That's because the site was suitable. It was sheltered with an easily
defended entrance and not too far from Richard's shed :-)

(or some other easily available timber)

And food. A garden with what we call pests is ideal.

'They' are not returning. The queen chooses a suitable site to build a nest,
the wasps which 'swarm' (not an accurate word but it will do) round later
are her daughters, they've been reared in the nest so they have no other
home. They're not returning from anywhere except from foraging.
