Strange immersion heater stat?
 

Hi All,

I was round the Mother in law's yesterday and she mentioned that the
hot water has been very hot since my brother in law changed the
immersion heater or stat (we weren't sure which) a little while ago.

I hade a nose in there and it looked like (difficult to get at) the
temp settings went (clockwise) 60, 50, 70 and 80 deg C?

Was this right or was I seeing things?

As I couldn't see easily I turned it 'down' (fully anticlockwise) but
later thought I heard the immersion on quite hard (kettle heating up
type noises) even though the cyl was still pretty hot from before?

Is it possible the wrong heater or stat has been fitted and would that
give strange (overheat for setting) results?

it may be that the stat is not wired in, so the heat is on permanently,

The stat range settings you have quoted are standard for a domestic hot
water stat - if it is too hot set it to the lower end of the range.

You will get a noise from an immersion heater tank as the element kicks
in - like a kettle, mostly you do not notice it as the tank is usually
insulated and hidden away in a cupboard or in a loft.

You say still pretty hot - even at the lower end (60deg C ) the bare tank
wall will be about 2 ouch (this is a calibrated (?) measurement which equals
the length of time you can touch something before you say ouch and take your
hand away ;-) ) - 60 degrees is hot - the heater will kick in a few degrees
below this to bring it back up to 60 deg at the stat, with immersion heaters
you do get localised hot spots close to the element where the temp is much
higher (even boiling point ) hence the kettle type noises you are hearing.

Is it possible the wrong heater or stat has been fitted and would that

it may be that the stat is not wired in, so the heat is on permanently,

If the heat was on permanently the tank would boil and the noise would
frighten the crap out of you, the header tank would be like a geyser,
bubbling and knocking all the time.

It might be worth rechecking the direction - The last couple of
immersion heater thermostats I've had anything to do with work
'backwards' ie the temperature goes down with clockwise rotation.

I'd check again, with a torch and more stuff emptied out of the a\c!

As has been mentioned, it sounds like that when it's heating up to any
temperature. No need to be concerned unless it's really making a din.

above it was fixed but I may have been able to look down through the
slats once the shelf had been emptied ..) and *think* I saw the temp's
in the order mentioned above (and the stat *was* wired in but good
point) .. is that correct? (ie it goes from 60 down to 50 then to 70
whilst turning clockwise (ie not 50, 60 70?))

I think the order of the setting is the important factor here... Could
it have actually been 60, 50, 80, 70? (ie the settings actually go anti-
clockwise - have a look at http://www.pwatson.org/immersion.jpg )

It is highly unlikely that the thermostat settings would go down and
then up again in the way you describe.

Hi Peter ...

Ah, that's a better view than I can get on my MIL's one and its blue
plastic making it less clear. I might of also seen how I missread
it...

Depening where you start (and the arrow on the adjustment slot wasn't
clear for me either) you might be fooled into start reading from the
wrong place? (doh?) blush.
