Airlock

Can someone explain exactly how an airlock forms please.

I know how to clear them but it does get a bit tiresome as I seem to
be doing it all the time.

I don't understand why, with so much pressure from the tank, that the
air doesn't just get blown out.

I'm also thinking of adding a link between the hot and cold pipes by
the sink downstairs, with appropriate stop cocks, to give me an easier
clearance option - good idea ?

Thanks,

Bob.

It may be that the tank and refill is insufficient, so the level drops too
low under certain conditions, it can be because the hot tank is boiling
under certain conditions. It might be worth fitting a surrey flange so you
lose the air, or one of those auto bleed things. Badly designed pipe runs
make things worse.
No problems that I can see with a built in backblow system provided you have
a one way valve on the incoming household main so that any of your hot
cannot get back to the mains (it won't happen, but it is a requirement)
