I cannot receive a decent terrestrial signal so am connected to Freesat
via a dish. I also have a sound bar and a Humax. It is fine but overly
complicated to use. If I am not around my wife has problems. Is there
any where I can get unbiased advice on the way forward please? I would
like something, TV wise, like the the Samsung 52 inch we have.

I'm not a fan of the user interface on Humax freesat boxes but actually
believe that you aready have the best of a bad job in terms of setup,
usability and maintainability. Switch on Humax, switch on telly
(connected via HDMI) and it all boots up to a channel display screen,
viewing options available by 'guide'. Soundbar will likely power up
itself if HDMI's back to the telly or manually turn on by button press or
remote if not.

If you go for a freesat telly I don't know that the UI will be any better
and you will have to go back to the Humax to schedule recordings, poss
more complex rather than less.

Could 'follow-me' instruction with the missus every time you set

I've just bought a largish LG, and find the sound fine. Obviously it's better
playing through the surround hifi, but it really doesn't bother me that much -
it's clear, loud if I need it, and the Dolby Atmos (whatever that is exactly)
gives some amusing and surprisingly effective pseudo-surround. It even has a
good go at bass. So ideal late at night.

So firstly, what is the issue with Freeview? My samsung seems to be able to
get a freeview picture on a bit of wet string. Is it a known bad signal
area, or could it be an aerial issue? Not much point in changing if the
answer is cheaper than a tv. However I'd not exactly say any tv is plain
sailing unless you get an el cheapo non smart one. If you have internet and
the samsung is smart, you will probably be best getting the streaming
service, unless you need audio description which seems a bit hit and miss on
streaming services at present.

I don't think you can improve it much, really. Does the TV always come
on set to the correct HDMI input for the Humax? That's probably the main
thing.

Does the sound bar come on automatically? If not, you could simply leave
it turned on 24/7. I know that sounds a bit mad. I have a slight
refinement on this in two rooms that works OK. Everything in the room
that doesn't need to be on 24/7 is on a master switch. So TV set, CCTV
monitor, audio amp, CD player, FM tuner, table lamp, are all off when
the room is unoccupied. The two PVRs are powered 24/7 though, for
obvious reasons.

I suggest you check functionality very carefully before you buy a telly
with Freesat built in. Actually I've always preferred to have the
satellite tuner/recorder separate from the telly.

If you want to simplify it so that Freesat behaves like TDTV then you
need to get a TV with an integral satellite tuner. Some Panasonic & LG
models have this but you do pay dearly for the convenience of having one
less box. The odd one has Apple TV or similar droid offerings as well.

I reckon Richer Sounds is one of the more helpful places to go looking
but think carefully about what you actually want. You have probably
missed the boat for remaindered classic HD sets with satellite now.
Almost everything is QD these days...

https://www.richersounds.com/tv-proj...55-59-tvs.html

Basically you set it up once and choose satellite and then the channels
at switch on are mapped accordingly. You can revert to TDTV if there is
a sufficiently big rainstorm to block the signal. Almost all big sets
are smart in some sense or other and can use an internet connection.

The other way you might be able to simplify it is to use one of the
smart peripheral controlling sockets that slaves everything off the TV
on off switch so that it all powers up when you switch the TV on.

That was what I did for my mum and she was able to get the hang of Sky
TV quite well (at least to find her favourite channels). It was better
than TDTV which in Manchester on that model of TV would sometimes retune
(and most importantly Channel 4 Countdown) into Welsh!

It might be better for him to configure it so that if there is an active
HDMI input the set always takes its feed from that. I though that *was*
the default setting on most modern TV sets now so that when you switch
on the Sky box or DVD it pretty much takes control over the TV.

I have a Samsung TV (UE42F5000AKXXU), a Humax HDR Fox T2 PVR and a
Pioneer X-CM56/X stereo system. All are linked. The Humax does the
tuning, its HDMI output goes into the HDMI 1 input socket on the TV.
The sound output from the TV goes from the headphone socket to the
audio input on the Pioneer. I don't receive satellite, nor do I use a
sound bar, but I imagine the set-up would be similar.

Provided the TV is set for HDMI-1 input via the 'SOURCE' button on the
TV handset, when it is switched on it automatically receives from the
Humax PVR.

Provided the Pioneer is set to 'Audio' input, when it is switched on
it automatically receives its sound from the TV output.

I use the Humax handset to switch on and off all three units - the
Panasonic TV, the Pioneer Hi-Fi and the Humax itself. The Humax manual
tells you how to input the codes into the Humax handset to get it to
control the TV and Hi-Fi. It only controls a limited number of
features on both TV and Hi-Fi, but On/Off and volume are all you
really need, which it does, although all I use is the On/Off.

Hence, the Humax handset controls everything: On/Off on all three
units, volume and channel via the Humax. No other controls are needed,
at least not by me.

You don't say what model of Humax you have. It's possible the handset
on yours it isn't as versatile as that for the HDR Fox T2. Similarly,
it may not be possible to control the sound bar from the Humax
controller, even if the Humax you have can control other devices. But
the simplicity of use, using the Humax controller for all three
devices and hardly ever needing to use the Panasonic or Pioneer
handsets, must surely make it worth investigating.

Here's an image of the HDR Fox T2 https://tinyurl.com/y3gbdhue The row
of four 'white' buttons across the top select which device the handset
is set to control. Pressing a button selects the device.

I have an older version of your Humax remote control, RM-F01 instead
of RM-F04. I have just been investigating remote control codes emitted
to find a reason why I often have to press the Power button twice to
make the Humax come on. Do you ever have that problem? The codes don't
vary between first and second press like some systems do.

Your control has 'TV Portal' in place of my 'List' button, and some
functions are repositioned to other buttons. You have no 'Schedule'
button. What does 'TV Portal' do?

Could you clarify if you currently have a Freesat TV or is your TV a
Freeview one connected to a Freesat Humax box?

I'm sure there are many who read both newsgroups, but just in case there
aren't, you might get more answers reposting in uk.tech.digital-tv

Sorry, it is a freeview connected to freesat via the Humax

Does your Humax do recording? If so, a TV with integrated satellite
tuner will not do it.

Just get a new wife.

The problem is I have had her a while, so have become quite attached to her!

Mine with record to a USB device (HD or memory stick)

You need a 'granny reset button', or a written sheet of procedures that
will get to a defined "you can do what you want when you get here".

Should be possible to make the Humax have forced control of everything
with the remote, should be no need to change HDMI settings on the TV.

Make sure the soundbar (if using HDMI) is using ARC connected to the TV.
If it is using Bluetooth, well - a written sheet of procedures when that
breaks (or dump it).

How old is the Humax? What model?

Perhaps there is a new one, that is more friendly to use?

Why not introduce her to streaming? Their on-screen interfaces may be a
bit easier to work with, programme details are clearly advertised and
its on demand - no wandering about different channels hoping ...

Or just get her, her own TV. There are a few with built in satellite
decoders.

There is, but it is too new to comment on 'wife friendly' attributes.
