Recent post about septic tank produced a lot of hot air. Just wondering
how many on this list actually live in a house served by a septic tank?

I do.

+1.

Mine was built in the 1930s and the outlet goes to a 3 foot diameter
soakaway at the bottom of the garden, which backs-on to fields.
Initially I was concerned about the new regs but when I described my
situation to someone on the advice line they said I didn't need to do
anything - unfortunately verbal advice isn't worth the paper it's not
written on.

Yes they do! All waste flows into ours. The solids then settle to the bottom
of the tank but the liquids gradually fill it up and flow down an outlet
pipe into a burn about 20 yards from the bottom of our garden. Once every 2
years or so we have the solids pumped out and the tank cleared. That burn
takes the outflow from all the other cottages along the way and settles into
a marsh area downhill, which drains into a local river.

There has been talk about all tanks having to be converted into a different
system but it never gets far. The conversion would cost many thousands of
pounds and although the farms and bigger houses might be able to afford it
the majority of smaller ones couldn't. One suggestion was that the cottages
couldn't be sold until the conversion was done but in so many that would
mean they would be inherited but never converted and so the number of them
abandoned and falling into disrepair would soar. That is not something any
local government, or the tourists usually flooding the area in summer would
want to see.

Yes they do, it's cess pits that don't have an out flow.

kind of - more of a cess pit (800 gallon brick brick cube with a lid set
into the ground), but the overflow is piped to the sewage treatment
plant on the adjacent farm.

I have a septic tank, but you all know that I said so before.

I am assuming my tank is within regulations because I cannot make any sense of anything anymore.

You're thinking of a cess pit! Septic tanks have outflows.

The only difference to ours is that the pipe doesn't go into an
absorption field but straight to a burn, though that then flows into a marsh
area before any water flows into the river.

I liked the story (which I hope is true) about the couple asleep in
their camper van when they heard sounds of a disturbance outside. It
turned out someone was attempting to syphon the fuel but syphoned the
septic tank instead :-)

Cess pit: sealed container which has no outflow and does little to process
the sewage - effectively everything that goes in has to be emptied back out.

Septic tank: two vessels which process the sewage and discharge *fairly*
innocuous liquid into a soakway or a water course (though the latter is not
allowed in the new 2020 regs)

Mini sewage works: septic tank with mechanical agitation and maybe air
bubbled through the sewage to help it to rot more, discharging liquid which
is cleaner than for a septic tank, into either a soakway or a watercourse
(the latter *is* allowed in the 2020 regs).

Neither have been allowed for years. That's why I had to put in what you
call a 'mini sewage works' back in the noughties.. had a septic tank
discharging into a soakaway, they said 'New house? Cant use that'

Other methods are allowable. I.e. reed beds etc etc

neighbour has one of those. Bit of a pong in warm weather.

We have a septic tank which overflowed and thus spoiled the leach field. Local expert dug a huge long pit, filled it with rocks , piped septic tank in one end and outlet to adjacent small stream at the other end, covered it all in soil. I have my doubts if this is acceptable but we do get the solids emptied once a year.

Presumably the tea leaves found the pump out connection for the
camper vans toilet. That tank has no out flow and needs regular
emptying so is "cess pit" rather than a "septic tank".

I assume whats being referred to is a motorhomes waste tank (under the
floor of the motorhome) rather than a true septic tank.

I think the story is an urban legend though. Motorhomes often have fresh
water tank fillers that look a bit like fuel tank caps but grey water (or
toilet waste) drain taps could not be mistaken for fuel fillers.

Canal boats however DO have waste tanks with stoppers almost identical to
their fuel tank fillers (a screw in brass plug).

When we bought this house back in the 90s, on the same bill as our
council tax, we paid a flat-rate water and sewerage charge. This covered
mains sewerage and for those of us with septic systems it covered
pumping out the tank every x years. Then it changed - no sewerage charge
on the council tax bill, but a very reasonable charge for pumping when
needed. There is now a fairly high (haven't checked lately) charge for
pumping out.
