At the price some companies are charging you might want to use this

Not high enough ethanol content.

60% by volume.

Not high enough ethanol content, as I said.

Or a strong vodka

Vodka go upto 95%

Not legal in most jurisdictions.

Ditto.

if you can't be trusted to use the scotch to wash your hands.

You should use metho, thats fine for hand washing,

Not ideal if you do it a lot tho, gives you very dry hands,

I have some isopropyl alcohol, used for washing electronics, would that be
better than meths?

Bit better but still has the same problem.

Thats why the commercial products are gels.
Not hard to make your own.

It was while you were on holiday or something like that.

When I go away, I either drive where I am going or, more rarely these
days, leave my car in an airport car park.

You didnt then.

When is 'then' supposed to be?

Good few years ago now. Too lazy to try to find it using
groups.google, its such a complete ****ing abortion to
use and there are no easy unique keywords to use.

The only thing about that pattern that has changed since I first owned a
car is the relative probability of my driving to my destination or driving
to the airport.

As I said, I have never laid a car up. I hadn't even heard of the idea of
wrapping the wheels in brown paper until you mentioned it earlier in this
thread.

Maybe it was someone else then.

I don't see the point either. If you want to keep oxygen from them,
plastic would be better.

Sure, but it never made sense to wrap them
in anything given that it was a tiny subset of
the time the tyres were exposed to the air.

If you want to protect them from direct sunlight,

Nar it wasnt for that,

simply do what a caravan owner I knew did - place a sheet of plywood up
against the wheel.

When I was working in Italy, the hotel I was staying at would

translate to bean soup. I couldn't get enough whilst I was there, it
was wonderful. Sure enough, there was some sort of bean in it, but I

76% alcohol is 133° proof (Navy gin is 57% to meet the 100° proof required

The highest proof is 175° - 100% alcohol, but that don't come in bottles in

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol#Distillation

"Fractional distillation at atmospheric pressure can
concentrate ethanol to 95.6% by weight"

That's the "convenient" limit to distillation. You could get
that with a glass bead distiller apparatus with 100,000
theoretical plates, in one pass.

There are gadgets for making 100% ethanol, not documented
in that Wikipedia article. But basically, making 100%
ethanol is pointless, if you're only going to immediately
mix it with orange juice anyway. If you had a glass of
100% ethanol sitting on the counter, it would pull
moisture out of the air until it dropped to 95.6%
by weight again.

I used to run a still in a government lab every day,
and I happen to think stills are cool :-) It's the only
piece of equipment in the lab, that I had to lock up at night.
You couldn't leave it on the lab bench.

That’s trivially avoidable by using your foot to open the
door or a sheet of the paper towel for the door etc.

Personally I'd avoid pubs and restaurants
if there are any infected in my town.

Or use disposable gloves if you can get them.

and others haven't washed their hands.

Think about all that hard surfaced money you touch after being in contact
with the paper or cloth snot rag residing in the same trouser pocket of
the people shopping before you.

I hardly ever use trolleys or baskets when shopping and
its easy to take your own reusable bag and wash it after use.

Rolls of bog paper could be selling on eBay for 100's of pounds,

Now that the local supermarket shelves have been stripped of bog paper one
of little local convenience stores near me has filled the front window
with packs of toilet roll, albeit with a premium price.

I did have a tour of the supermarkets on Saturday and did fine that
Woolworths and Aldi had none, but the other normal supermarkets
still had some. Havent tried the local convenience stores. This is in a
town which so far hasn’t seen any positives at all.

why you hang out on Usenet where people can't avoid you as easily as in RL.

Yeah, I hardly ever buy anything at full price.

Just last week bought 15 500g packs of frozen peas and corn and
capsicums that regularly show up at less than half price, enough to
fill a whole of a freezer drawer given the 5 unused it still had in it.

God knows why they keep having specials like that,
they have a best by date in 2022 and we regularly
get that particular offer, and it isnt in aldi or lidl either,
the mainstream supermarkets all do it. Birdseye brand too.

I have cup full of that with almost every main evening
meal except when its pizza or something like that.

Because we have allowed China and India to become the worlds
manufacturer of generic medicines and their precursor chemicals.

China is unable to supply (temporarily) and India has responded
by banning exports.

News of a possible shortage has resulted in the standad FOMO
reaction, so we do have a shortage.

I remember when threats of a strike at the big bakers resulted
in almost instantaneous clearing of Supermarket shelves.
When did we last have a bread shortage ?. People have wised up.

That's assuming that old car hasn't been pinched due to not having an

I once left my Astra F (1998) estate for 7 weeks without starting it.
It turned over slightly slower than normal but burst into life

Shop frequently, use the self service tills. tap the necessary 'buttons'
with a knuckle and use contactless to pay.

When you get home, wash hands then rub donw every product with a
cloth that has a squirt of bleach rubbed into it.

I would avoid any hospital or GP practice that has air-con because
there is some suspicion that the virus can travel through the HVAC
system.

No. 95 proof possibly - about 46%

Nyet! I meant 95% ABV.

I remember proof from a long time ago, I don't think I have seen it
used recently.
Point me to a place where 95% vodka is on retail sale or I'll call you a
liar.

Sigh!, 2 minutes google.

https://drizly.com/liquor/vodka/stawski-luksusowy-192-proof-spirytus/p68164

The whiskey I originally linked to is 60% ABV. Which is in the alcohol
range of hand sanitizers.

76% alcohol is 133° proof (Navy gin is 57% to meet the 100° proof required
so that it doesn't stop gunpowder from burning).
The highest proof is 175° - 100% alcohol, but that don't come in bottles in
shops.

Heh heh. we had 2-litre winchester bottles of pure lab grade ethanol,
plus several others with methanol, and ethanol with less than 100%
pure for fixing blood and bone marrow slides and other in-vitro lab
tests.

Every year the Dean of the medical school had to warn the new students
not to try and pally up to the female lab technicians, in the hope of
something to enhance their normal source of alcohol.

So use the self checkout.

I don’t. I wave the phone at the machine.

All I do is tap the card button on the screen first and
can use a bit of paper etc on my finger if paranoid.

Or get real radical and use disposable gloves if
I can find some or normal rubber gloves if I cant.
