That only means that the Conservatives won it at last election. It does
not necessarily mean it is a safe seat. Indeed, the whole idea of TBP
not standing in existing Conservative seats was to avoid the
Conservatives losing any that were marginals. Of course, TBP standing in
non-Conservative held marginals could still cost them seats they might
have won.

So you've received your postal ballot paper already, have you? We're going
to be away at election time so we've applied, but we've not received our
ballot papers yet. I'm not sure when they will be sent. I was surprised that
the application didn't ask when we were going away and therefore when we
needed to have received them. It's a shame that there isn't (as far as I
know) the idea of a postal proxy vote: a postal ballot paper which is sent
to someone else (eg relative in another part of the country) for them to
vote on my behalf and return the ballot. There only seems to be a postal
vote (in which case you need to still be here until the ballot paper
arrives) or a proxy vote in which case your proxy needs to be someone local
who votes (on your behalf) in person.

OK, so we're in an area where our votes will be pushing against an already
open door, so we'll just increase the votes for the foregone-conclusion
candidate, but it would still be nice to vote. There's time enough yet: we

I used to do that for one of my neighbours who routinely migrated

Someone could quite easily do it for you, if they had access to your
letter box. The ballot card just needs your signature, but I very much
doubt they check that simply because they have nothing to check it
against. They would only check if there were some dispute.

Yes, UK voting has "always" allowed proxy voting ("always" meaning as long
as I can remember!) so that if you know you won't be able to vote, you can
nominate a proxy who can go along to the polling station (and it must be
that specific polling station in the UK) and cast their vote on your behalf.
I'm not sure what authorisation from you they need to take along -
presumably it needs to be authorised in advance (so the authority that you
provide is sent to your proven address). The wording says that if you
nominate a proxy, you can still vote in person as long as you get there and
vote before your proxy does on your behalf. You take it on trust that your
proxy casts the vote in accordance with your wishes, because there's no
legal way of checking afterwards...

Didn't you give a sample of your signature when you applied for a postal
vote? I believe that it did for "checking" purpose. Probably the reason
that your signature has to be within the boundary of the box is because
it can be machine checked.

This is Rory Stewarts old seat and he was popular as an MP attracting
"floating voters". Be interesting to see how well the unknown con

Previously a con strong hold (nearly a 16,000 majority in 2017 but
down from nearly 20,000 in 2015) and a 55/45 leave/remain vote so
unlikely to change but what will that majority be?
