An insult implies intent. The problem with Boris is that he seems to
do these things unconsciously, like his comments about Muslim women
wearing the burka looking like letterboxes. It shows either a lack of
awareness of his responsibilities as PM to set an example to others or
that he thinks that casual racism is the right sort of example to set.

I'm not entirely convinced that it's the role of the PM to *know* the
holiday dates of all the world's religions.

He really only needs to know, or at least check, the five or six most
widely practised in the UK.

You might have a point that civil servants should check this, but it's
almost certain that Boris didn't make this announcement after discussing
it with civil servants.* He simply chose the date because it's before
the EU's next meeting.

Which, in itself, is further evidence that he simply isn't up to the job.

points out a downside with a particular choice of date.

Yes - but it's only after stopping on several floors that you realise
something odd is happening, and by then it's a toss-up whether it would
be better to get out and wait to for the other (remaining) non-Shabbat
lift (which might be pretty busy), or simply stick it out where you are.

Oh come on

you can't really expect anyone who's elevated to the highest job in the land
to be fully prepared about all the nuances of the role

that would be a real waste of time for the 999 out of 1000 who fail to get

It's going
to be great!...

Well, he won't get the devout Jewish vote, unless he moves the date

Er,

Applications to vote by post must be received by 17:00 BST

So that's Margaret Hodge sorted, at least.

I got the impression that the main objection was that he hadn't
taken the Jewish population into account when setting the date,

how many non-Jews have even heard of this holiday (let alone know
when it is)

Or that there is one day when they arent allowed to write;

There isn't one day, there are lots of days

Just most of them are Saturdays (technically from sunset on Friday to
sunset on Saturday)

Even driving counts as working

Presumably cooking also, so perhaps they have to eat pre-prepared food
on the day

I wonder if opening the fridge door is also disallowed :-)

tim

We just bought a new fridge which has something called a 'Sabbath Mode'.
I've only skimmed the details in the manual; but it seems to be mostly
there for disabling the alarms and displays. I believe it is German
(although no doubt made in China), so there may be a heightened
sensitivity about such things.

Could someone explain to me Corbyn's anti-jewish policies? Can't say I've
heard much about them. Unless you mean a degree of support for Palestine.

I'm sure there may well be some anti-semites in the Labour party. But I'd
be most surprised if there weren't a larger percentage in the Tory party.

Yes I agree and that margret hodge complained about his

off a jewish cemetery to a private land owner to build houses
on.
And from what I've been told she was leader of a council when
there was a child sex scandel which she know about but ignored.

Between 1982 and 1992 "Red" Margaret Hodge was the leader of the
London Borough of Islington A.K.A "the Peoples Republic of Islington"*
with a red flag flying over the town Hall. Corbyn was the local MP.
Despite Islington being a total shambles under her leadership, Hodge
subsequently tried to blame Corbyn for not having intervened.

Hodge subsequently did a sharp right turn under Tony whereas Corbyn
stuck to the principles Hodge had previously espoused.

Well princibles are one thing but.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Hodge

Child abuse controversy
The end of Hodge's service on Islington council, prior to her entering Parliament, was marred by the emergence of serious child abuse allegations concerning Council-run children's homes in Islington.[17] She apologised several times since the emergence of the scandal in the 80s that directly linked her council tenure with what she admitted in 2014 was "shameful naivety" in ignoring the complaints of paedophile victims.

It takes one hell of a lack of imagination to stay in a lift that it calling at

I have fond memories of being in a hotel in Tel Aviv one Saturday morning.
My room was

one where the door opens and closes automatically, and it stops on every
floor. It was
long, long trip.

But surely you could have got out at the next floor, the
first floor the Shabat Lift stopped at and taken the other
lift ? Or at least at the second floor the lift stopped at,
once you realised what was going on ?

He strikes me as the kind of person who gets out of his car when it's in the

And also the kind of person who, after listening to the tannoy on a train
platform announcing the train for *****, rushes up to a member of staff and
asks if this is the train for *****, then boards the train and asks random
passengers if this is the train for *****.

I love it when that kind of person waits while other people read the display
that confirms the train's destination. Perhaps they never learned such a
skill.

To be sure, I fail to see the connection - but I suppose if Brexiteers
believe there is a connection between the EU and (say) foodbanks, this
shouldn't really surprise me.

You can also judge the more obnoxious middle aged people on trains, because
after boarding and finding a seat they will sit down and then say
Aaaahhhh as they have done so.

Time to find another carriage.

Yes, it is as though they have endured something awful finding their way onto a
train. Still, I'd rather be among them than the generic urban type who thinks
listening to music on loudspeaker is appropriate, or the slobs who put their
feet on seats.

every month or so I get someone rushing on the the central line tube and asks me if this is going to X or Y I usally have no idea as I'm only concerned with the two stops of my journey where it goes after I get off I don't care and therefor don't check.
Perhaps I should ask them ? did you listen to the staion annoucnements, or look at the front of the train or look at the arrival/destination boards, because that's what I'd do.

Of course Boris has blue eyes, so very likely a colour vision problem.

It takes one hell of a stretch of vivid imagination to link a Shabbat
Lift and a Car Wash - but respect for doing so!

It takes one hell of a lack of imagination to stay in a lift that it
calling at
each floor instead of transferring to one that goes directly. Perhaps a
better
analogy would be that you'd have left the sunroof open.

I'm not sure that sunroofs are much-used in Israel. The sun's too hot.
You're more likely to have the A/C on, and all the windows closed.

no, you're allowed to walk as we

In which case they have no need to ask as they can get on any train
read the destination on the onboard display and get off at the next stop
if necessary.

My stop which is largely out of doors serves Heathrow Airport.
Terminals 1,2,3, 4 Terminal 4 only, maybe Terminal 5 as well.
The next stop down the line is mainly undercover as are all the
stations after Hounslow Central. If they are locals going to the
Airport then they should know better. If they are tourists then
they'll have already passed these covered stations on their
inward journey,

This doesn't however stop large numbers of them patiently waiting
in the rain until the "right" train comes along.

Because it makes no sense to try and get across all that
fine detail as PM. Thats what the civil service is there for,
particularly when its so trivial to adjust the date when
someone points out some downside with the initial date.

He has spent years trying to get the job. He should have spent that time
learning everything there is to know about it.

Even sillier than you usually manage and thats saying something.

You're just prejudiced by the fact that you don't like his policies

Not in the least.

Corse you are.

If he was doing the job well, I would admire him for it, even if I
disagree with what he is trying to do.

But you have remarkably silly ideas about what the PM's job involves.

That date stuff is the job of the civil service, not the PM personally.

However, all he does, time and time again, is to prove that he really
isn't competent at anything except promoting Boris.

He did manage to get to be PM, more than you have ever managed.

Name a religion that isn't nonsense!

Religions ain't nonsense. Up to the individual on whether they believe in
any form of 'higher power', and there's a compelling case to do so.

What is a nonsense is when a man controlled religion - as all are - seeks
to impose its values on others.

But what is equally as bad is the religion of Brexiteers - seeking to
impose their views on others.

Your god appears rather lacking in power. A decent one would have given
you a big majority of those entitled to vote. Lets say all those who voted
voting leave. Very very few would argue about 2/3rds of those entitled to
vote being in favour or whatever.

Brexiteers are still waiting for the virtue signalling, holier than thou,
