Under cabinet (i.e. in plinth/kick area) drawers - anyone done this?
We are making our utility room a bit smaller to accommodate a shower
room. Thus we need to make best use of all the available space. I've seen a couple of adverts for and DIY descriptions of plinth or kick-panel drawers. On looking at the detail these seem to be simply normal ball-bearing runner drawers put into the space under a normal cabinet. Am I missing anything or is this what they are? The cabinets I'm thinking of adding these to have sides right down to the floor, not feet, so it is fairly straightforward I would guess. However I'm not sure that I fancy reaching in far enough to place the rear screws for the runners, especially as these need to be pretty accurate (I've fitted quite a few normal height ones in home built cabinets). So has anyone seen 'under cabinet' drawers which are just a box on wheels? We're only aiming to store infrequently used stuff in them so the ease of use of ball-bearing runner drawers isn't really necessary. Are there 'under bed' drawers like this? -- Chris Green · |

Just cut the wheels from plastic so they don't swell/split with water. Some plastics wear a lot better than some others. NT |

I made some boxes from plywood (biscuit joints) and used furniture glides like these: https://www.sdslondon.co.uk/castors-...ure-glide.html That has the advantage that you need minimal clearance between the drawer and the floor, and its straightforward to pull the drawer all the way out if you need to. The fronts were made out of ply covered with floorcovering, with a plinth seal strip at the bottom and a pull handle in the middle. We use wicker baskets, no wheels, ideal for vegetables, on our tiled floor. The plinth was discarded and the exposed raw chipboard edges covered with a piece of wooden moulding.
