Dump the landline. Even then, scammers are starting to call mobiles.

There's no law that you have to use the POTS you get with broadband.

Indeed there is not, and there are also a few BB technologies that don't
actually require a phone line anyway. However for many the deal is
structured to encourage you to take the package of BB + Phone +
whatever, and since you have now in effect "paid" for the phone, it
makes less sense to pay for it again elsewhere.

I'm with virgin who bizarrely make it cheaper to have POTS+TV+BB than
standalone BB. But the phone hasn't been plugged in for 4 years.

Personally I would not want to be without my landlines... better voice
quality, lower latency, integration with my PABX, and they circumvent
the somewhat ropey mobile signal here (i.e. it works, but only in some
places in some rooms of the house).

I'm with you there John. The poor quality and plain unreliability of
many mobile calls gets on my nerves, especially when the caller
actually has a landline and is at home.

I was very glad to have a landline this week - we lost power for hours,
twice, due to an enormous wildfire (north coast of Scotland). After
about an hour, the local mobile tower died. With the landline, we still
had access to the outside world.
Today, EE was working on that tower, and standard mobile service
disappeared. My current phone does wifi calling, though, through the
broadband I get with the landline.

with a setup fee of 20p and 10ppp mobile calling is now much much cheaper

(and don't tell me I can get "free" calls from my LL if I subscribe into a
bundle. I don't have a baseline use the phone that's enough to make use of
a bundle, for the optional extra calls to be free)

There is also the 18185 option

Their setup charge is 4p and UK landlines are 1.7p per minute.

Mobile calls are 6p per minute, but my Three PAYG rate is 3p per
minute.
