On Friday I installed a wireless doorbell for a deaf woman.

Why would anyone ring an electrical contractors to fit a wireless doorbell?

I put mine in and I'm blind. Admittedly I needed somebody with eyes to get
the thing outside level, but apparently some installations tradesmen have
seen must have been put in by somebody who was ****ed at the time.

The only critisim Hive of wireless intercom type devices is you cannot
initialise the conversation, ie if the caller is too thick to press the huge
button, and decides to **** off after rattling the letter box, you cannot
talk to them. A wired intercom is different of course.
Also the remote units, in my experience have too low a battery life for
actually clipping it to ones belt as you move around the site.

A lot of jobs such as this are "Handymen" jobs.

Yes they are but it seems the trade of handyman only exists in the us and
Canada.
Everywhere else people specialise.

I do hope if its a straight doorbell its not one of the very cheap ones
where there are only about half a dozen different codes and the bloke down
the road runs a take away.

Once let loose on newgroups, it was common for september newbies to post
their troublesome computer or house electronics questions on
alt.engineering.electrical because the item had a plug?

Indeed. But it may reflect caution. If you don't have personal
recommendations* an "established" electrical contractors offers a degree
of security over and above a sole trader (or one person company). IMLE
that's one reason the Pimlico Group gets work at £95 minimum charge.

That's London prices.

Outside London, in many areas finding a vaguely reputable plumber or electrician to come out at /any/ price is difficult.
