Default Self tapping/self drilling screws - where to get assorted selection

I've finally treated myself to 14.4v combi drill from Aldi's.

Now what I'd like is a nice selection of suitably sized screws both
for metal and for wood.

I don't want a 100 of this or 100 of that, just a nice variety. Happy
to buy a specific set if I have a specific project but that's all I
seem to be able to find on the regular websites.

Any pointers please?

Long ago, on a distant galaxy - I wanted to build up a bit of a stock
of odd sizes of nuts and bolts, so I asked a local stockist who sold by
weight, what happened to all the bits they dropped on the floor. They
said they were not worth sorting back to their bins, so they just threw
them in an oddments bin. I offered to buy some of their oddments, but
they said help yourself to as many as I wanted.

Toolsatan used to sell a silverline self-tapper assortment box of 130,
but it seems they now only do much larger assortments of 750

https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Self+Tapping+Pack/p11414

The smaller packs are available elsewhere, e.g.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-245023/dp/B000LG0TS6

The larger one is only better vfm if you're going to actually use that
many ...

Since it's not urgent, keep an eye on Lidl and Aldi offers. Assorted
screws in a fairly nice segmented box come up from time to time.

Toolstation do a variety of screw packs that might be the kind of thing
you had in mind. E.g :

https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p99160
https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p70805
https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p11414

(search for "screw pack" to find others)

But isn't the drawback that if you need one screw of a certain size you
need several, and the mixed pack doesn't quite have enough, and even if
it does how do you restock it economically?

Decide on about ten sizes that span the range. Go to a specialised
fixings outlet and price up boxes of 100 or 200 of each. You might be
surprised how cheap those places can be. Not eBay though: the quality is
likely to be poor.

I throughly recommend a couple of boxes of self drilling hex head screws. Very sharp, they'll drill through sheet steel and hold fast. Any place that sells roofing will have a wide range.

Sounds a good plan. The box of 700+ from Toolstation would be ideal -
if they were all assorted.

And as several have suggested, I'll probably need to buy a specific
size if a serious project arises.

I have from donkey's years ago a nice selection of wood screws,
slotted.

Interesting bit of trivia. The BBC (scenery) construction shop changed
from slotted to Pozi. And minor injuries to the construction workers
dropped by some 75%.

Unless you have a particular need for "period" screws in furniture

I've got all my late dad's, my late uncle's, and my late
brother-in-law's dad's slotted screws, and they were all avid collectors
of fixings. Seems a shame to throw them away, but I'll never use them.
Nails are an even bigger issue. I mean, there's no way a nail goes out
of date or is superseded to the point of being useless, but I really
have a got a lot of them. My dad in particular would buy 200 nails for
every job, without checking his stock.

I fear I must agree. Slotted screws are a PITA.

but - if you arec trying to remove paint from the heads to insert a
screwdriver, slotted screws are much easier to deal with.

Good point.

Something else is that *old* screws were tapered (some?) which I feel
gave a better fixing for wall plugs.

I can't claim to have any parallel threaded fixings fail but the action
seems to cut a thread rather than expand the plug.

Tapping a pozi head with a sharp point (i.e. a valid use for some of the
spare nails!) will usually clear them enough. Failing that you can
always dremmel a slot into em if you must!

IME they tended to make the screw "tighter" - but mostly near the
shallow end of the hole where it does less good.

With modern plug designs and the right size hole, they seem at least as
good in practice as the old style plugs and screws.

Yes - you really do need to keep an eye out for these goodies. Or pay 4
times the price at Halfords, etc. At 3 quid a box I'll be stocking up on
pop rivets and heat shrink.

Something else is that *old* screws were tapered (some?) which I feel

I can't claim to have any parallel threaded fixings fail but the action
seems to cut a thread rather than expand the plug.

Parallel thread screws are better for wall plugs. But you have to get
the right size screw and plug, and drill the right size hole.

Unless you have a particular need for "period" screws in furniture
