Harold Wilson shut down more mines than Maggie.
They had all become commercially unviable.


Not so, according to one mine manager I met at the Cambrian
Railway Headquarters in Oswestry many years ago.

He was still able to quote, down the last penny, the cost of
mining each ton of coal and the price that it sold for at a
healthy profit.

He was still bitter, many years on, at being ordered by Harold
Wilson in a phone call to close the mine with immediate
effect.
