Visiting TLC today, I was told they are running down all stocks of halogen
GU10. Including the so called Eco versions. So soon will only stock LED.

I don't think they can blame the EU for that (the sept 2018 ban doesn't
apply to halogen spots) so it must be that people are mainly buying LEDs
anyway, no problem with that, I'm sure specialists will sell halogens
for years to come ...

Good. How often have good old fashioned energy saving florescent tubes been replaced with half a dozen or so 50W energy 'saving' halogen GU10s to look modern anyway?

I'm sure you'd be very happy with a fluorescent tube in your living room.

Manufacture of GU10 halogens all ceased for the original 2016 ban.
Although sale of them is still allowed, no orders for replacement
stock from manufacturers has been possible since 2016.

There is still stock around, but generally of lower quality products.

This house when I moved in had fluorescent ring luminaires in both
reception rooms, complementing plastic ceiling tiles - a distinctly
seventies feel.. :-)

I bought 4 LED GU10s from Toolstation's Bargain Corner at their main
depot for a friend who consumes them in her bathroom. Idea being see
what difference there was. Swapped them all out when one of the halogens
went. 2 were "decent" makes, 2 were a bit Silverline (buggered if I can
remember anything other than one being Duracell(!))

Overall, they were fine. Slightly reduced spread (ie harder cutoff) but
decent colour rendition and they lasted longer than some Tesco halogen
GU10s that were once tried (10 days) so no great worries that the future
is now here.

Fluorescents work well as house lighting. The problem is that most people have no idea how to make them work well, and stick bare bulb ugly fittings in the centre of the ceiling.

Leds work better.

True and are too stupid to even notice how they are used properly.

Which is what most do with LEDs too - they simply replace one type of lamp
with another.

If a lighting system is designed from scratch, I'd hope it would work well
regardless of the type of lamp used.

Thing with fluorescent is you generally need to conceal the tubes for best
looks. Not the same as with other types of lighting.

Saw some nice circular fittings once in an National Trust Cafe. Hell of a
price though - I tracked down the makers.

A new generation doesn't know how to fit an outdoor LED Floodlight - they
are usually set to waste 50% of the light to the sky and to annoy people
across the road!

Corse it is with the traditional large incandescent bulbs.

And it isnt even feasible to design it so it can take either and look good.
