Asbestos disposal cost-surcharge from skip Co

Hello all.

My father in law is having his roof replaced (slates, membrane and perhaps battens). The old roof materials were put in a skip and when the skip man came to collect, he said that he suspected that some of the waste contained asbestos and that there would be an £800 surcharge for removal.

I think the alleged asbestos-containing material was the old, man-made roof slates. The chap supposedly took a sample and then showed my father in law a statement or report from a testing lab, but did not leave the document with him.

Firstly, is £800 a reasonable charge for collecting a skip with some asbestos-containing waste?

Secondly, do materials containing *any* detectable asbestos require specialist, expensive disposal, or is there a threshold amount beyond which the requirement is triggered?

I would have liked to have had the opportunity to take a sample and get it tested, myself, but my father in law has paid up and the waste is gone.

Thanks.

Ant.

Surely this is the problem of the company doing the re-roof?

If it was roof tiles it would have been asbestos cement. This does
not require specialist contractors for removal but the disposal costs
may be higher than for general waste.

Agreed

Not really enough information here, maybe customer agreed to contract
the skip and the roofer separately.

Does rather smack of a scam, or at best someone being opportunistic.

I needed some Marley plastic floor tiles removed. As the contain
asbestos there was a fuss over them as well.

The requirement is to double bag it and take it to a waste site that accepts it. £800 is taking the ****.

Fuss, perhaps. Bag them yourself and take to local tip for landfill,
no-one would notice (or worry). *Certainly* no need for double bagging
and marking, IMHO.

No not in the cases I've had, 200 max if its huge amounts of the most
dangerous kind also did the people have an asbestos disposal certificate and
if they did I was under the impression from the blokes who came here that
they would have to seal the load before moving it, or bag it. I'm very
suspicious. Did this guy wear a Stetson and some guns and arrive on a horse?

When I sent some 3 tonne of roof sheets in a year ago it cost twice
the amount a normal tip would charge at £160/tonne, there was a
minimum charge for 3 three tonnes and an extra £30 for the consignment
note.

In my case it was a 40 mile trip in the truck to West Malling but
cheaper than having a skip from a specialist company.

I wrapped it in DPM and builder's bags
