You might find it difficult to get a saw mill re-saw sleepers for you due to to the risk of foreign bodies being buried in the timber damaging one of their expensive blades.

I once enquired about rip blade for a chain saw as I was re-sawing an 8ft oak log which was proving difficult to pass through the band saw. Nobody round here has ever heard of such a thing and the standard cross cut chain saw blade is rubbish at ripping.

They may ask you to guarantee that. I know lots are very loathe to touch anything non forestry grown as there is no guarantee it hasn't had something buried in it at some stage of its life

was/am hoping it would be as economical if not more so than usual
route of presenting my wallet to be assessed.....

Well I have 12x10 presawn oak beams here..green oak.

About 160 each IIRC. The firm - Whippletree hardwooods - will saw to
order - and plane if you want.

They are south of Cambridge... Others exist.

I hired a van to collect doors and windows once...and as I said there
are other places - wales and the west country are crawling with oak
sawmills..
