It might be of interest to some posters. I did say it was OT.

I count myself fortunate to have been living overseas for the whole of
the 70s. Looks like it was Britain's ****tiest decade ever.

I left at the end and emigrated. Id had enough bloody socialism to last
a lifetime.

So I missed Thatcher and Charles and Di by and large.

A friend of mine is emigrating next week.

To Azerbaijan. Really.

Seems a bit excessive, just to see the Eurovision Song Contest! .-)

To the ultimate in fascism: apartheid S Africa.

It was - interesting and a wee bit dangerous. Being caught between two
sides you didn't have a lot of time for..

But as my aussie friend said 'at least you will get meat three times a
day' and fundamentally yes, I wasn't hungry and broke any more.

I came back cured of a social guilt after three years and set about
becoming a millionaire.

I can't think of two less attractive concepts. Azerbaijan. Eurovision
Song Contest.

Had a friend who worked out there for a couple of years as a project
manager for an oil company, probably 10-15 years ago. He couldn't
wait to get back. I can't remember the specific reasons now, but
he did have a gun pointed at him a few times.

Not so excellent.

What was the social guilt you said you were cured of? I don't understand that bit. I have some distant rellie who went to SA in the 70s and is still there. Apparently they love it.
