winch or hoist
 
i am making a simple gantry and it will only be used to lift 100kgs
max,i intend to use a 12v battery for power as the gantry will be
mobile,i have seen loads of 12v winches at reasonable prices but few
hoists,is it poss to utilise a winch?,many thanks in advance

How cheap you need, 240V though so might need a meatty inverter to
stop it stalling

For 100Kg what's wrong with a block and tackle? 4:1 will give you a
25Kg (ish) pull which should be easy enough.
