filling hole in wall where cables used to be
 

i have a long (metre or so) gap in the wall about 1.5 inch deep and 1
inch high where i think cables used to be. how would i fill this ? it
seems to big a gap to use standard filler.

ive seen this in the shop would it do the job ?

Fill with a wooden batten and finish with filler

You could use bonding plaster to do this. It's what they'd use on
site for this sort of job. If you fill it so it's just below the
surface and let it harden up a bit, you can then use finish plaster on
top to get a nice flat result. If you're not happy doing the finish
plaster then you could just skim it with regular filler and sand it
smooth when it's dry. Hope that helps

Providing the wall is dry, I would just fill it with plaster.
A large bag of plaster can be cheaper than small bag of filler.

You need to do it in two layers. The first layer fills the
hole to within about 2mm of the surface, and then you do a
finish coat for the final 2mm. You need finish coat plaster
for the finish coat, and bonding coat for the bulk. You can
make your own bonding coat from finish coat just by adding
some PVA into the mix, so you can get away with buying only
a bag of finish coat plaster. This bonding coat will shrink
and crack as it sets, but that doesn't matter. Old/out-of-
date plaster is good for this as it will set quickly.

If the wall has any chance of rising or penetrating damp,
use a cement based mortar with a waterproofer additive for
the bulk, and then plaster or a filler for the final 2mm.

Use one of the lightweight filler like this

It will fill that size gap in on go & doesn't need much sanding.

plaster.

ok thanks for the advice, so either bonding plaster or lightweight
ready made filler..

i have learned that for internal wall repairs use plaster and for
concrete floors use sand/cement mix and aggregate as well if its a
deep hole.

can you buy the sand/cement/plaster from standard diy shops? they
seem to stock ready made stuff more than the basics.

i already used some of that inside but now realise its meant for
outside repairs (thats how little i know) will it be ok internally?
