Would anyone know how to remove the head of a British gas TRV to unstick it
manually.

Doesn't it have the usual knurled finger collar at the base, which you
need to turn to loosen? (Sorry if that sounds a daft question and the
answer's "Duh, no", but you didn't say what the problem was).

Yes it does have that, so that is what loosens the TRV to come off, is it?
Just didn't know how.Sometimes the TRV is a bit sticky ie heat to rad
doesn't work unless The TRV is twisted open and shut a couple of times. It
is also very stiff. Also brand new.

Yes, turn the knurled ring and the whole top half should lift away (it
is keyed so you can only replace it at the correct rotation).

Underneath you'll see a small steel pin protruding out from the body of
the valve - you should be able to push this in (against a spring) and it
will come back via the spring. Takes quite a lot of force (use a flat
metal plate or similar to push it; you won't be able to use fingertip)
and maybe working it in and out a few time will help? But take great
care not to bend it - even slightly and you'll have stuffed it.

That is what you do to remove the head ,the thermostatic part ..the part the
water travels through will remain on the radiator so no need to think water will
come gushing out .As someone else has said when you take the head off you will
see a pin sticking out .Push it in and out a few times to loosen it .they
sometimes stick. Replace the head and see if that improves things .

Really? Mine can be replaced in any position so that you can have the
numbers showing no matter what orientation the actual valve is in.

They're usually keyed insofar that they will only fit in one of, say,
six positions - i.e. it uses a hexagonal mating face. Perhaps that's
what matatbandq actually meant? Presumably this is to stop it from
turning whilst either tightening it up or turning the control.
