Hi further to my last post, I'm still a little perplexed by the seal on
my new upvc doors. The outside one just does not compress at all.. now
could this be a design feature so that as the internal one beds in the
external one starts to take up the slack ? They dont seem to be letting
in any draughts but the external seal has a clear gap ( fraction of a
mm ) when I shine a torch at it. Can someone else go and have a look at
their doors to see if they are the same ? Have I just got doors with
rubbish seals on them ? maybe I'll give the installers a bell and ask
them if it's normal oo er.. worried now !

Try this trick to see if the seals are actually 'touching' - take a strip of
newspaper around 50 - 100mm wide and open the door. Place the strip of
paper between the seal and the door and then close the door and 'drag' the
paper out. If you cannot easily do that - or there is a slight resistance
to the pull as it comes out then the seals are working as they should.

If there is absolutely no resistance, then the seals are not working - armed
with this fact, its time to complain to the installers.

I have just checked mine and I can't see any gaps, the external seals are in
contact with the frame. As well as the newspaper test you could also pour or
spray some water on and see if it trickles past the seals.

Had a similar problem. After a battle with the 'installer' and no
'joy' eventually they got a guy from the door manufacturer down who
found the frame was incorrectly installed, insufficient shimming. He
realigned the frame and reshimmed now both seals engage when door
closed and latched. So much for a FENSA certified installer!

blimey thanks for that I'd better give them a call today. I was
thinking that maybe the frame was a bit warped, when I undo the bolts
the seal tightens up a bit. Shining a torch in there you can see a gap
( can see light reflecting from door frame ! ) If no joy i guess I'll
have to have the thing out myself and do it properly.

I just called the chap who fitted it he says he's fitted hundreds and
never had any problems.. hmm I must admit I feel like I'm being a
little bit of a perfectionist, however it should definiatly seal up
nice and tight IMO I wander if it'd just be easier for me to pull out
the mastic and slide some packing in there until it seals up properly?
Maybe most people just don't notice/ worry about it. I'll keep you
posted !

Funny about this thread. I wondered about our own door the other day
(fitted 2 years ago). It seemed to me that the seals "engage" better
when I latch the door (i.e. swing the handle upwards). We tend to do
this anyway (latch it), just because it feels right, but I made a mental
note to go round with the old joss stick one windy day and check for
draughts. (Not to invoke blessings but because a joss stick is a nice
steady safe trail of smoke.)

Whatever: it's about 100 times better than the wood/glass door that it
replaced.
