Retensioning Henderson Merlin canopy garage door
 

My garage door spring needs retensioning as its reluctant to reach the fully
open position without the aid of a good shove. Replacement parts and
specialist tools to do the job are easily available online. I would
appreciate some pointers as to how its done - the prospect of the horizontal
spring unwinding whilst my fingers are in close proximity doesnt sound too
appealing. Many thanks

Dangerous. Get someone who has been trained to do it, or survived....

Googling "henderson Garage Door tension" will get some advice.

agree with previous post get a professional to do it for you.retensioning
torsion springs are not a diy job.

Recently we had a salesman (*) call wanting to fit external locks to our
garage. I didn't buy the lock but I did get him to refit the cable to the
garage door, service it and adjust the tension. All for the princely sum of
£10. At the price it's just not worth the effort of doing it yourself.

(*) The bloke was the salesman/fitter/owner of the business rather than just
a sales droid. I think the company was Garalock but I could be wrong.

Henderson mechanisms are the junk end of the market, I'd replace it
with something that works and will continue to work. Cant see much
point doing repair after repair.

Are you sure it doesn't want oiling? The spring has a lot of internal
friction. Also the roller track may be dry and the rollers knackered.

Yep, junk end of the market. My junk end of the market door gear
[canopy] has barely lasted 22 years and has had to have the 'cones and
wires' replaced, now let me see...oh yeah, thats it, once!

I for one cannot fault it!!

Thanks for all the tips guys. My door is 27 years old. Having thoroughly
cleaned and lubricated where necessary and replaced the cones & wires it
seems as good as new. As suggested by another contributor the spring did not
need retensioing once it had been lubricated. Heres hoping for another 27
years use.

Henderson are most popular because of price, but the mecha simply isnt
upto reliable performance. Of all the garage doors I've dealt with, the
ones with bust mechas were in almost every case Hendersons, and the
ones that wouldnt open and close smoothly were in almost every case
Henderson. If you want such kit, go for it.
