Any tips for making rugs stay put on a carpet?

They seem to always move in the same direction, presumably
with the pile.
They don't even stop when they reach a table leg etc...
just buckle up or try to get round it!

Velcro. Hook side on the back of the rug.

Are you sure your house isn't tilted?

Ikea sell something resembling a piece of special fabric which stops rugs
slipping. You simply place it on the carpet then place the rug on top.

It's not 100% effective, but pretty good. I use a rug under my computer
chair because the chair wheels would badly mark the carpet. Wheeling the
chair about used to cause the rug to slip particularly badly, but Ikea's
product even eliminates most of that.

We used double sided tape by Selloptape, I think. That was excellent
until our two year old discovered that he could lift the rug by pulling
it - the tape isn't quite so good after it has been lifted once :-(
