Default B0rked dishwasher

Does it actually fill with water? If not, then it sounds like a water input
problem - either there is a blockage somewhere or the input solenoid needs
replacing. Both pretty easy to DIY.

I noticed yesterday that our dishwasher was taking a very long time
sitting there silent and idle, whenever it needed to fill with more
water. But it would suddenly kick into life after a while and begin
filling.

Today, it has stopped doing this. It won't fill. The dial just sits in
the same position (I assume, waiting for the dishwasher to fill). If I
click it round to another position (say emptying) then the dial clicks
itself around as normal. It only gets stuck while waiting to fill.

What's the likely problem? Easy to fix?

Do I

a) Fix it myself following advice on this group
b) Get someone in to fix it
c) Replace it with another built-in dishwasher

c) is reasonably appealing were it not for the cost, as this dishwasher
(only branded "Diplomat" - it came with the house) will not take normal
dishwasher tabs, they are too deep to fit in the little drawer. I
usually have to break the tabs up by hand to fit them in.
